About the Author

Jeff was an average high school runner who learned, trained hard and made the US Olympic team in 1972. His most satisfying moment, however, was pacing his teammate, Jack Bacheler, through the Olympic Trials Marathon and dropping back at the finish line so that Jack could take the final qualifying spot on the team. Since then, the force of his life has been helping others to enjoy the experience of running and and walking and the achievement of finishing a challenging event. Jeff's specialty is maximizing the enjoyment and satisfaction of running and walking, while minimizing the time spent, the injuries and the fatigue. He keeps innovating and articulating techniques which help average people enjoy running and walking more, run faster and reduce injuries. In Jeff's training programs across North America, thousands of beginners finish a marathon six months after taking their first step. More important to Jeff is that most of these folks are hooked on fitness. The feedback Jeff receives from his E-coach clients, training program members and Retreat and Running School participants provides the success base of the advice in this book.

More About the Author

Jeff Galloway (born July 12, 1945 in Raleigh, North Carolina) is a former American Olympian. A lifetime runner, Galloway was an All-American collegiate athlete and a member of the 1972 US Olympic Team in the 10,000 meters. He remains a competitive athlete, continuing through a successful masters running career. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Galloway Productions, which conducts a broad range of training programs and events yearly; he also owns two running specialty stores.

Jeff was an average teenage runner who kept learning and working harder, until he became an Olympian. He is the author of the best-selling running book in North America ("Galloway's Book on Running") and is a Runners World columnist, as well as an inspirational speaker for more than 200 running and fitness sessions each year. He has worked with over 200,000 average people in training for specific goals and Galloway's quest for an injury-free marathon training program led him to develop group training programs in 1978. Galloway is the designer of the walk-run, low mileage marathon training program (Galloway RUN-WALK method) with an over 98% success rate.

This is not a bad book if you have not read any of Galloway's other books. But if you have "Galloway's Book on Running", or "Marathon You can do it!" than this book is mostly more of the same. The training programs are different than the other two books I mentioned, but they are posted on his website for free. In short, if you are interested in Galloway's running techniques, check out his website and get his "Book on Running." It is his most comprehensive work.

Jeff Galloway's training philosophy KEPT ME FROM QUITTING!! I heard about Galloway's run/walk method from (now good running buddy) someone I met while running my second 5K race.

I started out running using Ease to 5K app on my Iphone. I have NEVER ran in my life, always hated running, and was 55 yrs old. A friend suggested I run to help me lose the weight that I wanted. Had worked up to running continuously for 30 minutes. For a 55 year old female, I was pretty stoked!!! But, I had reached a wall and had NO desire to put out effort and training time required to go past 30 minutes continuous running! I live in Texas and the heat/humidity is NOT your friend. I was seriously considering quitting because I knew I couldn't keep up the continuous running not with summer coming!!

I know my limits and running continuously in the Texas heat/humidity was my Achilles heel. My first 5K race my goal was to run continuously without walking. I accomplished it but when I finished, I was not exactly "socialable". Two weeks later I ran my second 5K and I found myself having to take 2 quick "cheat" walk breaks or I was going to die! I was SO upset with myself! I even did the walk breaks in areas where I felt no one would see me! I had this mind set that if you walk - you're a sissy! Whimp! After this race is when I met my new found friend!!!!! Galloway run/walk method! LOVE IT!!! LOVE IT!!! It was my running salvation! I knew I could take on the summer heat/humidity because of the walk breaks. I had to come to grips with 2 "ego" issues: 1. slow pace and 2. not running continuously. I'll be honest, 2 months of using the walk/run training method, I am STILL dealing with these 2 issues.

Galloway's programs are not just for people who have run their whole lives, but also for people who have just started running--even as late as their 40s and 50s! Maybe 60s, I have no idea.

All I know is that I've hated running my entire life. I ran for softball (during practice and games) but NEVER otherwise.

I took Ann Ringlein's Beginner's Luck (Lincoln Running Company), which employs the Galloway run-walk-run class that runs 8 weeks over the summer in Lincoln, NE. Several years in the running, this class has over 400 people every summer--folks who have never run before. Why? Because the Galloway method is a safe (non-injury-inducing), relatively painless (no running is completely painless, but I don't resent having to run now because it's actually "enjoyable!), and goal-oriented method of learning to run more than to the bathroom or mailbox.

I highly recommend this resource. He has run more than 100 marathons, but has dedicated himself (Like Ann Ringlein) to helping others be healthy and learn to run (AND LOVE IT!).
