4.0 out of 5 stars Just what it purports to be
I'm not sure what the other reviewers were expecting from this book, but it seems to be just what it claims to be: a focused look at training for 5K and 10K races with training plans and some more detailed training advice.

I disagree that it's just for beginners, but it does aim at Galloway's target audience of runners who embrace the walk/run philosophy; if...

3.0 out of 5 stars Get "Galloway's Book on Running" instead
Not a bad book but I would recommend getting "Galloway's book on Running" instead. It is more detailed and has all of the information included in his new book and more. I also found it to be better organized. The only attraction of Galloway's 5K/10K book is the trendier photos he has included, but I don't think this justifies the purchase.

I disagree that it's just for beginners, but it does aim at Galloway's target audience of runners who embrace the walk/run philosophy; if that's not your bag Galloway's probably not the author you need to seek out.

I'm training for a 10K and it was just what I was looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Galloway 5/10 K, August 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Galloway's 5K And 10K Running (Paperback)
If you are "not a runner" and want to complete a short local run this is the perfect book. All of Galloway's material is excellent. Google "run, walk, run" for more information about his running method.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction, December 26, 2007

This review is from: Galloway's 5K And 10K Running (Paperback)
I suppose this is a good introduction for someone preparing for their first 5K/10K. I am by no means an experienced runner but have run a few 5Ks and I found most of the advice in this book to be pretty elementary. Some of the advice I had never heard before, such as taking regular walking breaks in order to avoid fatigue and keep running further. I don't think I'll be picking that up, but I agree someone just getting in shape should focus on the length of the workout rather than how fast you completed it. Not being afraid or embarrassed to take walk breaks if you need them. But most of the book is pretty basic.

Another piece of advice I took away from this book was not to be afraid of Coffee. I run when I get off of work, and sometimes I can really be dragging and not have very good workouts. He suggests having a little coffee before a workout to get you going. After I tried it, I saw a lot of improvement in those workouts.

Overall this book may be a five star book for a beginner, but for me it was only three.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Beginners, January 23, 2012
This review is from: Galloway's 5K And 10K Running (Paperback)
This is a great book for people trying to break into 5K/10K running. It covers many areas besides just running. I would recommend for intermediate runners also. The only thing I would caution readers about are the time goal programs. This is the only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars. I'm mainly a 5K runner in the process of trying to break a 20 minute 5K. I found the 19:59 minute time goal program to be a little over the top. My current 5K PR is 20:06 and was in great shape when I started the program. I'm 29 years old and have no major injury history. The program definitely put my entire body to the test. I ultimately had to quit the program 4 weeks in due to several nagging pains, not really injuries, that I feel were from overuse. I know everyone's body is different and if you're fresh out of high school this program will probably work great for you but for those close to 30 and above you'll probably need a little more time for your body to adjust to the abuse. Overall, great book.
