5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection. Unique. Charming. Infectious. Fun., September 27, 1999
By
Dawn Livingston (Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: From Galway to Dublin: Early Recordings of Traditional Irish Music (Audio CD)
This collection is unlike any other collection of Irish songs I've yet to hear. I loved the song with the concertina. I had to look up what a concertina was first though. And no, I'm not going to tell you. :D Look it up, or better yet, buy this CD! Great song, infectious. Loved the tin whistle solo, the flute duet as well as the piano solo. You're not likely to have heard Irish songs like these, using these particular instruments. Molly Durkin, The Widow Malone, Let Mr McGuire Sit Down were my favorite of the songs utilizing vocals. They don't have the best voices but the songs are fun, energetic and the lyrics interesting, different. This is a worthwhile CD to have and a must if you are interested in Irish music! I didn't think I would like the music at first. I got my first listen from a library copy. But before I knew it, somehow I wanted to hear the songs again...and again. I think you will too. What fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not likely to disappoint, April 30, 2003
This review is from: From Galway to Dublin: Early Recordings of Traditional Irish Music (Audio CD)
I picked up this CD on a whim when I was in a music store while looking for some sheet music. Thank God the clerk couldn't find it, else *I* would have never found this delightful CD. This collection spans recordings from as early as 1921 to as late as 1959. Every song and I mean EVERY song is pure delight and charming. I was leery about the quality of the recordings, but every song comes in clear.
Edward Meehan and Neil O'Boyle's amazing fiddling on tracks 4 and 9 are worth the CD alone. Dan Sullivan's near belligerant babbling in the first track "From Galway to Dublin" is wonderful, and Delia Murphy's rendition of "The Boston Burglar" is hopeful in it's sadness.
The jacket provides a very quick and thorough history on Traditional Irish music recordings and of the performers.
I don't think there are enough adjectives for this CD. Well worth the cost for traditional Irish music lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars For traditional Irish music lovers..., December 6, 2008

Other reviewers have said it... utterly charming and a throwback to another era. I'm not a musician, so it's hard for me to describe, but it gives me the feeling of being in the room with musicians as opposed to slick, perfectly produced music. My daughter is a step dancer, so I've listened to my fair share of jigs and reels, and there are some excellent ones here, but in a much more simple, traditional style. I enjoy it more each time I listen to it. You can also impress your guests on St. Patrick's Day with this one!
