Review

When Kathleen McBride spots a lone rider coming down the path to Twin Rivers, the ranch left to her and her brother by their father, she's elated. Certain that it is her brother Danny returning from a prosporous cattle drive to Virginia City, she heaves a sigh of relief, knowing that the past due mortgage on the place will now be paid. As he draws nearer, however, apprehension seizes her as she realizes that the tall, dark rider isn't Danny at all. Chance Ballinger is a wanted man. Wanted for a crime he knew he didn't commit. But until he can prove his innocence, he drifts north toward Canada to make a new start for himself and the young niece and nephew he left back in Texas. It's love at first sight as he rides into the lush Montana meadows of Twin Rivers. The stuff dreams were made of; a place a man could call home, while making a comfortable living at cattle ranching to boot. Now the only thing left to take care of was telling the 'old maid McBride' that her reckless brother had lost his share of the spread to Chance in a card game, along with all the money he'd picked up for the ranch's cattle. He knew things were bound to be a bit unpleasant at first, but he'd make her see that the best thing for all would be for her to sell him her share of the place and move on. It would probably be a relief to her be rid of it. Little did he know that the redheaded spitfire with an angel's face would let him have it with both barrels once she finds out about his proposal. Stung by her brother's betrayal and infuriated by the audacity of Chance Ballinger's offer, Kathleen's Irish temper flares. Yet, after the dust settles, she finds no other alternative, but to let him stay on until she can earn enough money to buy back what Danny had lost them. Being near the handsome gambler on a daily basis proves more than unsettling as they weather the hardships of ranch life together. Kathleen comes to see the true character of the man she's determined to hate and can't fight the strong feelings he stirs in her woman's heart. Eventually, Chance's past catches up with them and the blossoming love between them is put to the ultimate test.GAMBLER'S DAUGHTER is magnificent! With real-to-life characters, set in a story that is destined to become a favorite. With Chance Ballinger, Laura Devries has outdone herself. Truly an unforgettable hero. Lovers of western romance won't want to miss this one!Lori Wright -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved -- From Literary Times

From the Publisher

Chance Ballinger is on the run from the Texas law when a lucky poker hand wins him half share to a prime Montana cattle ranch. When he travels out to the ranch and meets his "partner," Kathleen McBride, she's at the business end of a loaded a shotgun--aimed directly at him. Some sweet--and fast--talking convey the truth to Kathleen--she's got no choice but to join forces with this gambler. He's the same kind of man her daddy and brother were, but worse. He's got a smooth way with words and a devil-may-care grin that make her Irish temper flare--and her heart beat quite a bit faster.

Gambler's Daughter is a passionate love story that will appeal to fans of Linda Lael Miller. It's a heartwarming tale that includes humor, the antics of two adorable children, and a love match that was written in the great Montana landscape.

DeVries writes with a sensitivity that is uncanny. Her characters live and breath, hurt and love. It seems she has an understanding of human nature beyond your everday author. It's a book you can't put down.
