5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting folksongs from the Illinois Country, September 18, 2007
This review is from: The Gambler's Fiddle: French Creole Fiddle Tunes and Ballads from Old Upper Louisiana, Vol. (Audio CD)
I recently attended a private concert by Stroughmatt in Carbondale, Illinois, and many of the songs that he performed are on this album. Stroughmatt learned to play fiddle and speak Missouri French from his friends in Old Mines, Missouri, which is one of the last pockets of French Creole culture and language in former Upper Louisiana (now Missouri and Illinois). The tone of his fiddle is warm, his playing is masterful, and the tracks are wonderfully arranged. Highly recommended.

This music is absolutely the best that I have heard in a very long time. If you like bluegrass and/or Irish Folk, you will love this.
