4.0 out of 5 stars a throwback to delta blues that comes off convincingly, February 3, 2005
This review is from: Gamblin Woman (Audio CD)
This album testifies to a band being able to reunite and connect with its earlier roots. Canned Heat started out as a blues/rock band, with a folk twinge to boot. Gamblin' Woman boasts some impressive tracks which harken back to Delta blues. "Hucklebuck", "Drifting" and "Gamblin' Woman" are upbeat numbers that dont overdo it.

Some of the tunes I find a bit repetitive (Remember Woodstock and Dear Mother Earth are clones). but on the whole if you like a compatible marriage between Delta blues and rock, you will like this album

4.0 out of 5 stars Another gem with James T. leading the 'Heat'.., May 8, 2009

Ok buy it! Simply, it's another really 'top shelf' later Canned Heat USA [revitilised] album. This is their Hollywood studio album with James Thornbury cruisin' along with the Canned Heat Gang at a casual pace. Here he stands at 'The Bears' microphone, singing along with deep boogie and Blues Harp tones, flute?, slide and guitar. This yellow biker girl cover looks kinda 'corny' but it's definitely 'a keeper' for any Canned Heat fan and it's much better than some of the other post 90's releases. Check out a killer version of 'Take Me To The River' and plenty of other slow burners to groove with.I'd suggest its one to keep in the car for driving on those long road trips.
***James T. by the way [I assume] doesn't see 'a bean' from any of his Canned Heat recordings, but his excellent 6 solo albums were released independently in Australia. He sells a Best of James T. at gigs mainly...
