I had the original GameBoy when it came out 10 years ago, and I liked it a lot. 2.0 out of 5 stars Game Boy Color, No LIght-No Play!
I recently purchased a Game Boy Color System as a time killer for when I travel. Lord knows for me and the kiddies out there that you darn near have to be under direct sunlight to get a good picture of the game. If you plan to take it on a plane or let your kids play with it in the car at night while you are driving, forget it. Nintendo claims that they used state...

I had the original GameBoy when it came out 10 years ago, and I liked it a lot. The new color version is definitely a long-needed upgrade, but unfortunately Nintendo did this one on the cheap and skimped on the most important aspect of the system - the color screen. Not only is the screen tiny, but the colors are rarely as vibrant as they look on the advertisements. The screen can be very difficult to see under most lighting conditions. (I have actually found florescent lighting to be best.) That flaw aside, the games make this system... and there are hundreds of them, and many of them are very good. Even though I practically am blind after playing for more than a few minutes, I use my GameBoy color more than any other game system. It's easy to take with you, and even if you are over 12 (like me) there are games that you will enjoy during the daily bus commute or whatever.

This review is from: Game Boy Color - Teal (Video Game)
I bought a Gameboy to entertain my children and me when we are traveling. I'm not sure why reviews of the "dandelion" Gameboy are different from the "teal" Gameboy, but I bought the teal. First, my 7-year-old loves this game! I bought Super Mario Deluxe to go with this and she had never seen it before. I enjoy this game, too. The small size of the Gameboy is amazing. This is the 8-bit gaming that used to require a TV and a large plastic box. Now, the Gameboy Color will easily fit in your pocket. And, the picture quality is comparable to what you used to see on TV. However, it's not all a paradise. In low light conditions, the screen is invisible without a supplemental light. I read about this in other reviews and I bought the worm light to go with it. These work and come in matching colors, but there is a definite drawback. They don't illuminate the whole screen and there is a definite glare on the screen. You must move the Gameboy around to create the best light condition at the spot on the screen you want to see. There are other lights available and I would like to try them to see if there is an improvement in quality. Still, this is a fun game. This console is relatively cheap and very portable. This will be perfect on long, boring plane and car trips. So, I recommend you buy this console. It doesn't come with any games, so be sure to buy a game at the same time. It does come with batteries, though. And, you will need a light to see the screen unless you only want to play outside on sunny days.

5.0 out of 5 stars You may want to look for a 3rd time..., November 5, 2000
By A Customer
Okay so the Game Boy is based on 10-year old hardware, has tiny sound, no light, blah blah blah.... now just wait a minute! There's a very good reason for all of that. First off, the 10-year old hardware: It works. Just look at how many games there are for this puppy. Plenty to choose from. Now the sound: that will be improved upon on the next rendition named "Game Boy ADVANCE" which will sport Dolby Surround sound (if used in games) and in STEREO BABY! Oh and most peoples biggest gripe is the lack of a backlight for the screen. The reason for this is cuz it sucks too much battery life from the system. Know this: GBA uses 2 AA batteries and lasts for 20 hours. Sega GameGear uses 8 AA batteries and lasted only 6 hours! Remember how big and clunky the Sega GameGear was? Try fitting THAT in your pocket! Oh and what if the light burns out? Might as well buy a new one cuz it's gonna cost just as much as having the light repaired. Just get a cheap NYKO Wormlight. It's well worth the purchase and it works 100% better than those other lame light/magnifiers I've played with. The GAMES make the SYSTEM, and you'll be happy to know that there are TONS of grade A+ games to choose from. You won't be disappointed. Just be sure to read some good reviews of games before you buy them. .... Just be sure to save some cash for Nintendo's next portable, the Game Boy ADVANCE. It will own you.

This review is from: Game Boy Color - Kiwi (Video Game)
I am 13 years old and although you may think this is weird, I enjoy pocket video game systems better than other consoles. This may be due to the fact that i spend a lot of time on the road. I have a now-dead Neogeo Pocket Color, and as soon as i found out I wouldn't be able to get any more games for it, I started saving up for a Gameboy Color. When I finally had enough money, I bought a Kiwi Gameboy Color with a Kiwi Wormlight and Warioland 3. I do not regret it! I never thought that this system had good graphics until I actually saw them. They are fantastic! As far as games go, Gameboy Color has enough great games to make up for its duds. I would stick to games such as Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario Bros. DX, Wario Land 3, and Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening DX. Stay away from the games featuring cartoon characters, such as Rugrats and Toy Story. They are mostly the same, been there done that platform games with weak gameplay. Sound is about as good as it can get for a pocket console these days. It doesn't blow you away, but it does the job on most games. The best things about Gameboy Color are that you can take it anywhere and there are games just as good if not better than console games. If I were you, I would get a Gameboy Color instead of any console. They are a lot cheaper, also. You owe it to yourself to buy one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Been a Game Boy since 91, November 27, 1999

= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
I got my first Game Boy in 1991. Got a GBC in 1999. Not disappointed. Want a great portable game system, with good graphics and a monster library of games and reference cartridges and the ability to play most of those games on Super Nintendo with Super Game Boy or get lots of older, discontinued games at online auctions or used game racks at video stores, you have got the best choice in portable gaming.

I have never regretted staying with Game Boy. Even with challenges from Sega Game Gear, NEC TurboExpress, Tiger game.com, and the new SDK NEOGEO Pocket, Game Boy will be able to thrive and to grow. As Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, and the upcoming Game Boy, which is supposed to be even more powerful but still with legacy compatibility (a Game Boy guarantee), why wouldn't you?

4.0 out of 5 stars GameBoy Color Nothing BETTER!, November 8, 2000
By
I like the gameboy color because it is portable and fun to use. it has 1 or 2 draw backs I'll name one. The screen is not backlit but a good part to this is because it's not backlit the batteries last longer. GameBoy Color compared to Neo-Geo Pocket Color is better because it has a bigger selection of games. And because it isn't backlit the colros dont bleed together so its easier to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Handheld Video Game Ever Created, April 10, 2000
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Game Boy Color - Teal (Video Game)
As of right now this is probably the best handheld video game unit ever created. I used to own a Sega Game Gear and I've played the Neo Geo, and this is still a superior unit for several reasons. First of all and most importantly is the games that are available. The GBC simply has one of the greatest selection of games out there. From Super Mario DX to Zelda DX to Pokemon you can't go wrong with the wide variety and quality of titles. Second the battery power, the GBC runs on two double A batteries and seems to last forever at least ten hours at a stretch. Next is the size the size of the GBC is perfect, it fits in just about any pants pocket yet the screen is big enough that it is easily legible. I often use mine on the bus, while walking to class, or even while working out. Other systems may have better graphics and sound, but the GBC seems to make the best use out of what it's got. Oh the worm light is also one of the best light sources I've ever seen for a hand held system and it's tempting to buy the GBC for that reason alone. All in all if you are looking for a handheld system, don't look any further this is the system to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars ideal!, November 4, 2000
I travel, I need a gameboy! its that simple.

this is no kids toy (im a 30something) and the range of games means there really is something for everyone. the controls are easy and the size and weight are just right.

battery life is excellent.

my only gripe is that the gameboy is very intolerant of different levels and angles of light. it needs a good strong light shining from above. in low light it is unplayable. therefore the clip-on light is probably a worthwhile purchase, though it adds to the overall cost.

im no gameboy addict - i just use mine on long haul flights and while sitting around waiting for someone - but id be lost without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Game Boy Color is Wonderful, October 21, 2000

This review is from: Game Boy Color - Kiwi (Video Game)
Just a little word to other shoppers, my son left his game boy color in the pocket of his jeans recently and needless to say, it went through the wash. I was quite upset & just assumed the Game Boy Color unit & gameboy game (Tetris DX) were ruined. To my surprise, both are perfectly fine. THANK YOU TO NINTENDO FOR MAKING SUCH QUALITY PRODUCTS.
