Editorial Reviews

Product Description
"Game Character Development" takes you through all the steps needed to create compelling, highly-detailed characters for games. This book is suitable for both beginner game artists and experienced designers who want to brush up their skills, and covers the latest character creation tools and technologies. Throughout this book you will work step-by-step to create a finished character that incorporates all of the methods presented. First you’ll examine the available modeling techniques and then create a base mesh. You’ll then incorporate UV mapping and virtual sculpting. With the basic model created, you’ll explore advanced techniques to add texture and detail, and finish up by optimizing and refining your character. The techniques presented can be applied with virtually any 3D software program, so you’re free to work within the application with which you’re most familiar. If a specific tool is introduced, a brief introduction will cover the basic information you need to utilize it. There’s even a chapter with suggestions on what you’ll need to add to your finished character before it gets introduced into the game production pipeline, including adding facial expression, rigging, and even animation. And a helpful reference section provides additional resources to help you with those next steps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but still worth the price, January 8, 2009
The book is great for learning to poly model. I wish I'd had this when that was my goal. That is its biggest strength, and a large portion of the book is dedicated to this. It's not app specific but for modeling this works out well as it's easy to get caught up in the details of tools and leave out the actual modeling itself or in some cases they even teach bad practices and make example models of poor quality. This book will teach you how to make a proffessionally made character model with a closed mesh which has no interpenetration and has good topology and makes efficient use of all its resources and is ready for use in a game engine.

The problem is, I really hoped for more when it came to the 'next gen' side of things. The author has good advice for making a 'next gen' character and everything he says is worth listening to, but he does not detail the specifics enough when it comes to using zbrush or mudbox.

Unlike poly modeling, the actual nitty gritty program details of creating a normal map or texture map and then exporting it is actually a painful process to learn on your own (especially in zbrush, which is a powerful product but not very user friendly or even predictable in how its interface works). Some examples of stuff like that or some additional details on a workflow that starts with sculpting first would have been very nice and would have prompted me to give a five star review instead of four.

EDIT: I decided to rewrite the review as it sounded worse than intended.
