The Great Sega Game Gear,
By "mebloom" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Game Gear Sega Portable Video Game System (Video Game)
If you're searching for the perfect portable game system, search no more, the Game Gear should be the only one on your list. Here's why!1.Slickest look of any system out there! Great color, graphics, and sound(especially with headphones). 2.Loads of great games, about 200(Shining force and Sonic are my personal favorite! 3. The backlit screen is like a dream come true! It gives great detail in light, and you can even play in the dark! No more worries about lighting or glare like the Gameboy color. 4. Does eat batteries(takes 6 AA, yes that's what I said), but with the A/C adaptor, car adaptor, or rechargable battery pack(each usually cost under $10), there shouldn't be much of a problem. 5. A bunch of cool acceseries too! There's numerous power sources, screen magnifier, carriers for everything, a cable that connects 2 Game Gears for two-player games, and even a TV tuner! 6. The price is unbeatable. I got mine for ... with two games, which is less than half the price of a Gameboy Color without any games to play! 7. Best of all, it's just great fun, especially on road trips or at parties! I got my Game Gear about a month ago, and I'm still having loads of fun with it. It's definately not the kind of thing you'll get bored of! Finally, you can shove a system in front of a Gameboy lover's face a yell "HA!!" I wouldn't recommend it to chirdren under 7 due to the weight and size(my sister is 6 and loves video games but she can't really grip the Game Gear). It's usually not a problem if you're older. But it's everything you'd ever want in a portable system, and I would recommend it more than any other. Go Buy it!!!

Great system at an unbeliavable price,
By A Customer

First off, the Sega Game Gear isn't going to fit in your pocket and it does eat a lot of batteries. These are the only two cons I can think of, however. I've had my Game Gear for about a week and am having a lot of fun. The unit gives great sound despite the fact that the audio comes through a little speaker, and if you use a pair of walkman headphones with it you will get full stereo sound. I was really impressed. In terms of the screen, it is full-color and backlit, the latter of which means you can play it in complete darkness (unlike the Gameboy Color). It also has better graphics than the Gameboy, in my opinion. Also, unlike the Gameboy Color, the Game Gear costs less than half the price, as do most of its games (of which there are a few hundred). Admittedly, no new games are being produced for the Game Gear but there are about 200 to 300 or more (I'm not sure of the exact count) available, which should be plenty. I mean, how many games do you really need, anyway? A lot of the games don't seem to be as kiddie-orinted, either (like Pokemon or Mario), which to me is a plus. Bottom line: for the crazy low price this is selling for, there is no reason not to buy it. It costs a fraction of what the Gameboy does, has a ton of great games, and you can play it in poor lighting conditions or even in the dark. One word of warning: Do pick up the AC adapter for this or you will be spending a lot of money on batteries. Quick battery consumption is the price the Game Gear pays for its back-lit screen. There are special Game Gear rechargable battery packs available for it for under $10, however, as well as automobile cigarette-lighter adapters for around the same price. Now go buy a Game Gear. Now.

If you're planning on buying any portable system, the Sega Game Gear should be #1 on your list. Here's why!1.Slick look, amazing graphics, sound, and color. 2.Awesome games, tons to choose from(Shining Force and Sonic games are my personal favorite.) 3.Backlit screen is a dream come true. Don't have to worry about lighting or glare like the Game Boy systems, and you can play well in the dark! 4.Price is definately a plus. I got mine for only ... with two games! That's less than half the price of a Gameboy Color without any games. Usually games are only $10 to $15! 5.Does eat batteries, but lasts long and with an adaptor, you don't even have to worry about it(car adaptor and rechargable battery pack make it even better). 6.Excellent choice of accesories, including cases for everything or just games, screen magnifyer, power sources, and TV tuner. 7.As expected, can go anywhere, a wonder on road trips, especially at night! In my opinion(and probably many others), the game gear is the best portable system out there. I'm only 14, but I know a good system when I see one. Even now it's still impressive, and it was put out back in 91'. Kids can finally shove a system in a game boy lover's face a yell "HA!" They'll be amazed! It is a tad heavier than most systems, but most probably won't even notice. I wouldn't advise it for kids under 7, due to weight(my sister's loves video games and is only 6, but can't really grip the game gear). But if you're over 7, the Game Gear is any hard core gamer's fantasy system! Buy it!

Game Gear is Cool!!!,

I ended up selling my GBA to get this. I personaly like it because of the Sonic Games, but there are over 200 games to fit your taste in games. I bought a used Sonic 2 cart with it and a AC Adapter. You really need an AC Adapter or you'll be spending $100 each year to get batteries, since it sucks them up in less than an hour. You should also get a carrying case because its too big to fit in you're pocket. The other good thing about it is that it has a built in light behind the screen. So you don't have to go buy a Wormlight like for Game Boy Color and stuff. I recamend it to anyone who is strong enough to pick it up.

Game Gear vs. Game Boy,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Game Gear Sega Portable Video Game System (Video Game)
If you ask me I think that the Game Boy is worthless. I have had the Sega Game Gear for 7 years now The Better Graphics and Sound quality are enough to make me not care about the size of it. If you have a cable to plug it in you don't have to have batteries also and it doesn't use the batteries up very fast anyway. The games for it are much better then the ... that you get for Game Boy or any Nintendo made system. I would recomend this system to anyone who want's a portable video game system. With this price aand the great price of games you cant pass this deal up.

Great classic system,

This review is from: Game Gear Sega Portable Video Game System (Video Game)
I have had my Gamegear since 1993, and it is great. Now, the system has brilliant colors, fantastic sound capabilities (sound quality will vary from game to game...some games will sound great, and some games will sound like ...), fantastic graphics capabilities (as with sound, graphic quality will vary from game to game...some games will look great, and others will look like ...), a perfect layout of the thumbpad and buttons, and a variety of peripherals. One of the most outstanding peripherals available for the Gamegear is called the Master Gear Converter (also called the Gear Master Converter). This device plugs into the Gamegear cartridge slot and has a screw that screws into the Gamegear's rear screwhole (the screw holds the converter in place). What the device does is allow you to play almost ANY game made for the Sega Master System (BTW the Gamegear is considered by many to be a portable SMS...they have similar hardware specs)! Needless to say, SMS games which required the Sega 3D Glasses (such as Zaxxon 3D or Missile Defense 3D) will not work with the converter because the 3D Glasses cannot be plugged into the Gamegear. And some SMS games are not available on Gamegear (Altered Beast, a SMS game I have, was not made for the Gamegear, but when you add the converter, you now have Altered Beast on Gamegear!).Gamegear has hundereds of games, and when you add the Master Gear/Gear Master converter, you will have a ball! In closing, Gamegear is a great classic system!

A Great System for the Vintage Gamer,
By
This review is from: Game Gear Sega Portable Video Game System (Video Game)
The Sega Game Gear is a joy with great color and sound -- better than the Game Boy. Not much new has been made for it -- in fact the system is not based on the popular Sega Genesis but the ancient and commercially less successful Sega Master System -- but that's what makes it a fun toy for those old enough to remember when arcades were the place to be. You can get 1980s classics like Pac-Man, Pengo and Missile Command for this machine, along with some titles that are relatively more modern, say NBA Jam. Sure it eats batteries, but adapters are $5. As someone who's now 30 (ouch!) I've found I'm able to go back to my gaming days with this without hogging the TV set. My daughter can watch Barney while I'm zapping bad guys.

I SHOULD HAVE NEVERGOT A GAMEBOY ADVANCE!!!,

This review is from: Game Gear Sega Portable Video Game System (Video Game)
Do you want add some more fun and entertainment in your life for a low price? Well, Game Gear is the higher-than-perfect answer for you!!!Game Gear was in fact was the original color portable handle game system that was ever released, all the other color portable systems have borrowed (COPIED) ideas from Game Gear. I personally owned two Game Gears and just got one new GBA, and I still LOVE Game Gear system and is even planning to buy one more; you know why? 1.)It had a Screen Lighting Designs that keeps it bright/easy to see unlike the Game Boy machines. 2.)Great Graphics and sounds. 3.)TONS of GAMES (Shinobi, Street of Rage, Sonic 3 are my personal favorites.) 4.)A bunch of cool accessories such as power sources, screen magnifier, carriers for everything, a cable that connects 2 Game Gears for two-player games, and even a TV tuner! 5.)Does eat 6AAs batteries, but with the A/C car adaptor, or rechargeable battery pack (usually cost under $10); there shouldn't be much of a problem. (TOTALLY BETTER THAN GAMEBOY) 6.)The tiny price you pay to GET THE MOST FUN!!! BUY THIS SYSTEM! It is WAY BETTER THAN GAMEBOY!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY! DON'T MAKE YOUR EYES GET WORSE WITH GAMEBOY!

The portable Super nintendo vs. The portable Sega Genises,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Game Gear Sega Portable Video Game System (Video Game)
You know, one reviewer said that this system can't beat gameboy; however, I don't think that's true. Ive written a review about this baby before and left out a couple of key points.First of all, game gear was one of the first to have a backlit screen, along with the SNK Neo Geo. THis means you can play in complete darkness. Can you do that with gameboy, gameboy pocket, gameboy color or gameboy advanced? Noooooooo. Gamegear has a way better sound output module and the volume can be turned up to three times louder than a gameboy's. And durability is way important. I said in my other review that I have had my gamegear for eight or nine years and it still works great. Everything is in color, no black and white here. But the gameboys are great in many ways too. Here are some features that gameboy has that gamegear doesn't. |
