The must have accessory for the NES fanatic,

Ever picked up an old NES game, and found yourself shouting at the screen saying "That's ridiculous! This game is impossible!" well, that was largely true in many cases, because so many NES games had game crippling design flaws. However, frustrated NES players found salvation through the Game Genie-- one of the best peripherals ever to be made for the system. Simply hook it onto an NES cartridge, put in three "wishes" in the form of codes, and suddenly you were were a video game master who could grind the kid from The Wizard into the dirt!
Some people will argue endlessly that the Game Genie cheapened the experience of some games, but really, the game developers were already doing that themselves. With so many games suffering from ridiculously unfair game design that in many cases made it near impossible to complete them, most of us probably only beat a small portion of the games we owned... That is, unless we knew someone with a game genie, or better yet, had one of our own! Why spend hours throwing the controller at the TV while playing "Dick Tracy" when you can just make yourself invincible and have unlimited super punches? I can't say Game Genie makes games more fun, but it certainly brought back the fun to games that were so hard you'd given up on them, and on the NES there were A LOT of those. It was a fun device, and when I was a kid it was a household name.

Ah yes.....the Game Genie! This item is SOOO awesome because its simple yet complex. All you have to do is follow the directions on the back of it and a screen with letters and lines will pop up. Then all you have to do is input certain codes for certain games! This thing gives you unlimited heath, ammo, special items, and characters! It's SOOOOOO cool!!!
You should definitly try it out for those seemingly unbeatable games!!!

My son, 11YRS, abosultely loves the game genie, the codes help him get through some of the difficult games he originally tossed to the side. This is a must have for serious gamers. We purchased the NES game genie to use with our Hyperlink Retron 3 game system, the game genie works great with it no compatibility issues at all. Cheat codes are all online, so if you can pick a game genie up cheat without the code book its not a big deal.

Having cheats like invulnerability, limited ammo, super jumps, etc etc made a lot of NES games really fun to play. Mind you, I feel that one should play a game at least once without the aid of cheats, but if you beat a game the 'normal' way, it is fun to play it again with cheats, just for the heck of it.

From An Old-School Gamer..,

Wow, talk about a trip through nostalgic lane. The Game Genie was a God-send to us old school gamers back in the NES/SNES/Genesis days. Of course, there would be other Game Genie-like enhancers i.e., Gameshark that would come into the 32-bit/64-bit era....But still, we old school gamers OWE everything to this product.
Now, for the younger generation that have got addicted to Halo, Gears Of War, God Of War, etc...Let me explain what the Game Genie was to us: if you take an 8-bit game like Contra (which is a GREAT GAME by the way), you got 3 lives, and one hit was fatal. Now, you may think "Oh, how unfair!" You have to remember that gamers paid $40 to $50 for one game, and if you can beat that game in 2 hours, you would of felt cheated. Back in the day, yes, games were HARD, but they were designed that way because they (the video game developers) thought that if a customer was to beat it in one day, it would be a loss on their part because the customer would of returned it and got their money back. Now, some games were just down-right sadistic: Battletoads, the Ghouls and Ghosts series, and the list goes on...so, eventually someone got smart and created the Game Genie. Now, I actually owned the Game Genie as a kid, and wow...plowing through Contra made things a HECK of a LOT easier. But the reason I used it on Contra is because I wanted to memorize the patterns of the enemies (you could do this without the Game Genie, but trust me, it takes a lot of memorization and time to remember every enemy from every level and also the pitfalls for each stage), and to see the end. But for most gamers, this was just a taste of what Game Genie had to offer. Game Genie actually HELPED the gamer beat a game, and if the game was fun, they would go back and try to beat it WITHOUT the Game Genie. Now, for TOUGH games, like Contra, Ninja Gaiden, the Ghouls and Ghosts series, this was like God coming down from heaven and saying to the gamer: "Here you need this." How did The Game Genie work? Well, you put your game into the slot, put The Game Genie into your NES/SNES/Genesis, put in the codes that you wanted, and you were ready to kick some butt. Now, you have to realize that most games were compatible with the Game Genie. Keyword: Most. Not all of the NES library games were compatible with The Game Genie; either they gave you NO CODES, or they gave you codes that either made the game HARDER than it already was. Take for example Frankenstein: The Monster Returns for the NES; the Game Genie had these codes: Almost Invisibility, Full Invisibility (May cause the game to freeze), Cannot Collect Extra Energy, and One Hit Is Fatal. Sure the Game Genie wasn't perfect with some games, but with the games that it was compatible with...talk about a God-send. If you can still get your hands on one, take it. Also, if you are playing a VERY HARD game and you can get even passed the first stage, say this if someone is around: "This is the reason why Game Genie was invented." Happy Gaming!

A vital component for the NES, and not for cheating...,

...but for getting games running to begin with.
That's right, I still have my old NES from 1991 and it's never failed me yet. But of course the NES - a classic system though it is - has start-up problems with several cartridges, especially over time. And that's where my Game Genie comes to the rescue. It's permanently lodged into my NES and I place my games in it. A quick detour through the Game Genie screen into the game, and I'm guaranteed that it'll run smoothly. So, if you have a NES and intend to make it last, the Game Genie is essential. What about its intended function, though? Well, the Game Genie is quite possibly the simplest cheating software you can find. I do not endorse cheating if you want to play a game properly, but if you're less averse to that (like I used to be), you'll be happy about the endless cheats available to an incredibly wide array of games thanks to the Game Genie. Want to fly over large portions of Super Mario Bros 3? The ever-popular start at level insert-number cheat? Look no further, it's all in the Game Genie. Provided, of course, that you have the codes. Codes are the name of the game - I use the term 'game' loosely, because it's not. It's a software intended to make other games more fun - to those who like to cheat, at least. It really couldn't be simpler to use your Game Genie. It is a triangular-shaped component (see the box) with a slot in which you place your games. Then you place your Game Genie gold-end-first into your NES and turn it on. It's not meant to go in all the way. The interface is very simple indeed - you are given a choice of three lines of code. So, yes, no god-modes here, you have to select three cheats which you want to apply for the game. Do you want extra lives and invincibility or do you want extra speed and to start at a certain point? It's up to you to decide. Be sure to check out the Game Genie code booklets out - don't worry, one comes with the game. It has to be said, though, that not all the codes in the book work. They do in the widest general sense, but you'll probably run into a couple that just won't work. Still, the booklet is thick and covers a wide variety of games indeed, allowing for lots of cheaty goodness. I, however, advise you to buy the Game Genie just to get your games running - you don't HAVE to input codes.
