Book Description

Not a hero. Not a villain. Just a man afraid to risk his heart…and hers.

The Happily Ever After Company, Book 1

Aengus Yates broke Suzannah Hennessy’s heart. Twice. As an eight-year-old, she entreated the handsome young rancher to wait. He laughingly rebuffed her and went on to marry his beautiful fiancée. When he abandoned his family years later, Suzannah should have felt justified. Instead, her heart broke all over again—with disillusionment that the man she loved could do such a thing.

Now fully grown, Suzannah signs up along with her shy, self-conscious best friend to let a matchmaker find them husbands. Love may not be in her future, but there is adventure to be had in the Wild West.

Aengus has done his best to make a fresh start, to banish old betrayals. When Suzannah appears at his door, it’s clear she’s no longer a lovesick child. Now her womanly curves make his heart pound with desire. Yet he dare not trust himself to love again, and he plans to tell her just that…as soon as she stops berating him long enough to let him get a word in edgewise, to tell her he’s just trying to live an honorable life—against some very dishonorable odds.

Warning: Contains a love-soured heroine and a love-starved hero who’d like nothing better than to sweeten things up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dissed fiance shows up again. September 6, 2000
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This 1866 historical will delight fans of the mail-order-bride scenario. Suzannah must come to terms with losing the love of her life Aengus Yates. This Irish heartbreaker leaves her for someone else. Believing she'll never see him again, she travels with her best friend Megan to Bent Creek, a growing town in the Sierra Nevada mountains, to watch this woman unite with a successful mate in an arranged marriage. Another man waits for Megan in the background, knowing this relationship is doomed. Under a different name Aengus masquerades as Megan's betrothed. Of course, when he sees Suzannah again, it's her he wants, not Megan. Filled with light humor and touching romance, this is a novel of discovery and renewal as these young lovers find joy in each other... body and soul. Donovan is a skilled storyteller. Reading her work is like watching a good movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointed November 24, 2012
By rjred
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book was well written but I found myself slightly disappointed, as based on the book description I was expecting to read a novel where there is a lot of verbal sparring between the two main characters, but instead of verbal sparring (which,by the way, I love to read), they got married quickly, had sex multiple times, and worked through a few misunderstandings. The book was a good read but I almost didn't finish it just because it wasn't what I expected or wanted to read at the time.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good, sweet story.... November 28, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This was a sweetly told, intriguing story of a mail order bride. The book did skip around to a lot of different subject matter but in the end the two parallel love stories going on were worked out. The main characters Susanna and Aengus were fairly well written. The dialogue was only so so, but the overall story was nicely done. A good solid read.

Love, love was a great read to the end. However, I felt it ended abruptly. Will definitely look for other titles by Kate Donavan.

3.0 out of 5 stars The conflicts of a baggy main character. May 24, 2013
By Myst
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My main difficulty with this story was the personality of the main character Susannah. The way she nagged constantly was grating on the nerves. I enjoyed the way the family came together I just wish the main character was more likeable.

More About the Author

I spent my childhood in Ohio and Rhode Island, where I wrote some fledgling stories in longhand/pencil. What a relief when I finally graduated to a laser printer! Meanwhile, we moved to California so I headed to Cal (UC Berkeley) for college, where I met my future husband, and together we survived law school at UC Davis. We've been married and practicing law ever since while having two great kids - a son and a daughter. I've had more than a dozen novels (and a bunch of novellas) published in genres including time-travel/fantasy, historical romance, legal thriller, romantic suspense, light science fiction and young adult. Most recently, my historical romances are being re-released in electronic format; my first young adult sci-fi was released (MECH GIRL); another time-travel story is in the works; and more science fiction is on the way. Full disclosure, I watch a ton of TV and movies, and virtually all of those are sci-fi, paranormal or irreverent comedy. I'm not looking for angsty or heartwarming fare. I leave that to Hallmark, which I'm told does a fine job of it. I just want a rousingly good story - to read and to write. Oh, and I'm a Niners fan and a wanna-be archaeologist, so be forewarned.
