This is an extremely disappointing documentary for what could have been as gripping a DVD as Cocaine Cowboys.

Many years ago F.E.D.S. Magazine conducted an incredible tell-all interview with Alpo Martinez. That magazine issue included a CD with an hour and 18 minutes of audio from Alpo recorded from prison phone calls. Alpo offered a complete breakdown of his start in the world of cocaine, the nature of his friendships with Rich Porter and AZ, and what ultimately landed him in prison.

This documentary doesn't remotely scratch the surface of what Alpo discussed, instead providing interview clips with a random assortment of people who had nothing to do with the rise and fall of the three coke kingpins.

Much of the 41-minute DVD is dedicated to the kidnapping of Rich Porter's younger brother, and features an interview with sister Pat Porter about the incident. While it makes for an interesting story, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the rise and fall of Rich Porter himself.

This so-called documentary does a major disservice to the tragic but fascinating story of the cocaine kingpins of Harlem. Do yourself a favor and cop F.E.D.S. Magazine Vol #4 Issue #19 (Kingpins Gone Bad), and spare yourself from renting or buying this DVD.

This DVD is a Troy Reed Street Stars production and was the basis of the film Paid In Full that Damon Dash and Roc-a-Fella Films put out. The DVD profiles the life and times of Alpo, Rich Porter and AZ, the Harlem trio that blew the coke and crack game wide open in the 1980s in New York City when they were teenagers and became street legends and pop icons in the process. Influencing rappers like LL Cool J, Cam'ron and Jim Jones and the hip-hop scene in general with their style, attitude and swag. AZ wrote a book with the same title, which is a good book, but it is lacking photos. But this DVD has a lot of the images and Troy Reed did a good job. Street Stars was putting out a lot of DVD's but they aren't doing anything now. That's a shame because Troy Reed is a very talented filmmaker. Check out his other titles which include The Alpo Story. For more on these street stars check out Alpo's interview in F.E.D.S. magazine, the Hell up in Harlem story from Don Diva Magazine and the blog posting on Alpo on the Gorilla Convict blog. But definitely check out the DVD because it is like that and worth watching if you are into these street legends and urban gangsters that have become a part of hip-hop's lyrical lore.

I lived around the place where this movie was made, then and now only makes me think how blessed I'm to have removed my self and family away from there.

A harlem classic. If you you a person that listen to NY Hip-Hop then you will get some insight on what they are talking about when they talking about the drug dealers

It was good. it could have went more in depth on why and how they were able to get in the game the way they did. But overall it was good.

HOW IS THIS VERSION DIFFERENT FROM THE PRIOR VERSION OR IS IT THE SAME ?
I have no idea about the VHS. The director's cut DVD is only about 46 mintues in length compared to the first DVD. Numerous interviews were either cut or edited. The first DVD is much longer in length and uncensored. In my opinion, the first is much better.
