3.0 out of 5 stars Good Match 3 Game, but half-baked app April 6, 2013
By J. Ruhl
Verified Purchase
At first glance, this seems like just another match 3 game, similar to games like Bejeweled, but this one sets itself apart with cool physics effects. Also at first glance it seems like a very high quality game with colorful graphics, cute sounds, and decent music that sets the cartoony Arctic mood. However things like no main game menu, no other game modes besides endless, and the Android back or menu buttons not implemented make the game seem incomplete. The only game options you have are Resume and Restart... that's it. The home button is the only way to quit the game.

Besides those issues, the actual game is not bad. It plays in portrait mode, so it seems optimized for phones, but I'm sure tablets can play this. The gameplay involves you dragging your finger to line up consecutive same colored gems to clear them out before the screen fills up. The gems actually fall and tumble around using realistic physics, which makes for really cool effects when setting off explosions. Line up a lot of gems in a row to earn spells, like TNT, to help clear up the pile.

This game does get very repetitive since there is only endless game mode. Also the game is too easy, especially since the game rewards you with spells often. I got up to level 25 before it actually got difficult, and by that time I was getting bored.

It is a cute game and plays very well as a match 3 type game, but it just feels like the game isn't complete and the difficulty pace is too slow. If this wasn't a free app, I wouldn't recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Neither great or bad April 6, 2013

So the objective is to break as many gems as possible within three (3) lives. There are five (5)power yups to unlock that aid you as endless gems cascade their way into the screen. Ice blocks appear gradually and are unbreakable without a power up. If the screen fills upyou llose one heart or "life". Once all three hearts are spent it's game over and your score is calculated for you to hopefully triumph over on your next endeavor. That's the ENTIRE game. No options or even a main menu. Just the aforementioned game "mode" and nothing more. Not bad and slightly addicting but it leaves plenty to be desired. Great for children.Certainly worth downloading as the FAOTD but I couldn't imagine even paying .99¢ for it. 3 stars out of 5

4.0 out of 5 stars Strategic Gem Removal April 6, 2013
Verified Purchase
In the product description, this game is compared to Tetris. I like Tetris, so I looked forwarded to playing this app. However, I think it's more similar to other games. The items drop down from the top of the screen, but they fall in single unit gems. They also fall in in a random pattern, so you aren't limited to specific shapes. You draw your finger on the items you want to remove, and when they disappear, the remaining items drop down to fill in the blanks. You aren't limited to the number of gems you can clear on each swipe, and you can change direction in the middle of your swipe. Again, however, the rigidity of Tetris isn't there, and the shapes spill down the screen towards the bottom. It is a cute game, but the vocal reminder that "It's piling up!" can be a bit annoying. The colors are soothing and enjoyable, and there is an ice theme to the game.

Update

Some fellow reviewers have expressed annoyance that the game doesn't respond as expected. While I agree that the game doesn't always do exactly what I wanted it to do, it does respond in patterns. And those patterns can be learned to beat the game. It takes some practice (not too much - I'd hate it if it seemed too easy or too much like work! ) to learn the tricks.

As a beginner, perhaps the most annoying feature of the game (to me, anyway) has been that the on-screen pop-ups block your view of the items you are attempting to remove. Since the shapes shift and slide around in position, and the goal is to make long strings, blocking out part of the screen it is a bit like putting a blindfold on an asking you to play the game. ;) I've decided to consider this an obstacle to overcome (for now, anyway), and will try to figure out a way to work around that challenge.

1.0 out of 5 stars *HOT* game April 6, 2013
Verified Purchase
Installed this game on my Nexus 10 tablet, after about 5 minutes my tablet lost about 10 - 15% battery drain from a full charge, and the back of the tablet got REALLY hot.
I tried to back out of the game like normal by hitting back button on the tablet a few times, but there was no option to exit the game or quit to title menu, etc, only pause or resume.
I ended up having to hit home button, then go to Nexus 10 System > Apps setting menus and "Force Stop" the app, then afterwards my tablet was starting to to restart other apps as well right after I force closed this one, I'm not sure if it tried to start up again in the background again, so I ended up having to uninstall this app and reboot the tablet to get my tablet working back to normal.

Besides that, the game is OK for a draw & match type game, but gets repetitive pretty fast. From what I was able to play on it, I probably would have uninstalled anyways after 5-10 minutes anyways if I did not uninstall because of it causing issues with my tablet.

I'm not sure if this app is incompatible with the Nexus 10, but I'd recommend staying away from it if you own a Nexus 10.
