4.0 out of 5 stars Be Careful, October 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Game Prog DOS/Win (Hardcover)
This is quite an odd package. Funny thing, is that if you just compile the code that is on there, just like it is, you will get at least 19 errors. For there are some weird settings that you have to make in order to make it work. How did I find this out you ask? Well, I talked to the author on the phone. He is a good guy, but this book that is inside this package is very old. Yet, there are a lot of important basic funademtals that can be learned from this book. The biggest problem that I had was that the book focuses on .pcx files and .voc files. Both of which are very out of date. It isn't to hard to get .voc files. But .pcx files... I don't know. If you make a bitmap is paint, say. And save your file as a .pcx, it is likely to freak out. If you want to learn more about the basics of game programming, then look no further, if you want something more up to date, I would suggest Stan Trujillo's Windows 95 games programming.

This review is from: Game Prog DOS/Win (Hardcover)
It is very frustrating to have to not only buy books on subjects you like but also all the necessary software to be able to use it. The Game Programmers Starter Kit gives you the Book, a CD of source code and games, and a CD with Microsofts VC++ 1.0 Professional and Learn C++ in 21 Days! No porting headaches or endless hours of translating from algorythm to code. Everything you need to do Game Programming and more is in this one package, get it or beware.

By A Customer
This review is from: Game Prog DOS/Win (Hardcover)
This was my very first book that I've read about game programming and it changed my life. I didn't know exactly what field I'd be getting in to, but this book changed all that. It made me realize the exciting world of game programming and what it takes to become a game programmer. Thanks Andre
