When HBO announced that Steven Warbeck was being replaced by Ramin Djawadi to score Game of Thrones, I was worried. I was worried that Djawadi lacked the complexity I would have liked to see in a strong soundtrack (his Iron Man score was lively but not memorable). I was worried that an announcement made in February for a show debuting in April would result in a mediocre, rushed work. For a lavish premium cable show, I feared that the music would fail to hold up its end of the bargain, made up mostly of generic ambient tracks that hide in the background.

I must admit that I now feel foolish for being so worried. Ramin Djawadi's first season score isn't a complete triumph, but compared to other strong first season scores, such as Bear McCreary's work on Battlestar Galactica, it holds up well. If HBO keeps him on and lets him build on this foundation, it can only get better.

Fans of the show may not recall much music from the series because much of it is atmospheric or an accompaniment to certain events. Djawadi does work in some rousing themes, however, from the powerful opener to the tracks that run through the season finale, but much of what happens in between is music meant for specific scenes. "North of the Wall", for example, does a fantastic job of evoking the cold chill of the lands beyond the giant wall of ice from the premiere, but it is also somewhat reliant on what happens on-screen; it works only in context with the action. "A Raven from King's Landing" is so short that it passes by before it even gets started. On the other hand, "Jon's Honor" is a moving piece so wrought with emotion that it needs no reference to stand out as one of the best tracks.

Game of Thrones is a sprawling fantasy drama television mini-series made by HBO, based on the popular first novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. Set in a fictional ancient kingdom similar to medieval Britain, it follows the fortunes of four noble families - the solid and gritty Starks, the manipulative and cunning Lannisters, the warlike but faded House Baratheon, and the proud and mysterious House Targaryan, the last surviving members of which have been banished overseas, but who have joined forces with the vicious and nomadic Dothraki clan and are looking to return home for revenge. The show has a sprawling, labyrinthine plot of murder, betrayal, sex, violence, magic and superstition, but at its core is about the four houses and their various political machinations to gain control of the fabled Iron Throne, and with it the monarchy of the kingdom. The show stars Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kit Harington, Harry Lloyd, Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa, and received rave reviews when it premiered on US television in April 2011.

The music for Game of Thrones is by German composer Ramin Djawadi, who was a very late replacement for the show's original choice, Stephen Warbeck. I have been very critical of Djawadi in the past, accusing him of having a limited dramatic sense and a disappointing over-reliance on the Remote Control sound that has dogged his career to date, through scores like Iron Man and Clash of the Titans.

I was so looking forward to this soundtrack being released but was unsure if the music would consist of "full fledged" thematic tracks or just what I like to call "snippets" of tracks meaning tracks under 2 minutes that accompany a scene. There's a bit of both but everything is so cohesive and wonderfully done that it doesn't matter. Whether you are a fan of the show/book (as I am) or a fan of movie/tv scores that can evoke an emotional response or period/cultural feel (as I am again), I think it stands on its own and delivers. Obviously it will have more resonance and connection for those of us that watch and love the show. Ramin Djawadi just earned an entry on my list of favorite composers. Standout tracks for me include:

1)Main Title (of course!)
2)The King's Arrival
3)Love In The Eyes
4)You'll Be Queen One Day
5)Jon's Honor
6)Game of Thrones
7)Kill Them All
8)Victory Does Not Make Us Conquerors
9)Fire and Blood
10)Finale

A magnificent gathering of music that was played through out the season. With 30 songs, it is a longer CD which I found delightful. Game of Thrones fans will be very happy to hear literally everything from the badass intro music to the finale's last scene. Highly recommend.

Game of Thrones is a fantasy with a very unique chemistry. It has a powerful cast with extraordinary acting, based upon a unique fantasy world conceived by George R. R. Martin with some of the most exceptional dialog I've ever read in the genre. Its opening sequence, while not like what you'd expect from fantasy, works to inform you that this world is a complex political machine, and you must know how to operate it or you will die. The opening score throws you right into this epic vision with driving war drums and a repetitive string rhythm that conjures the image of medieval war pomp, layered by strings that convey tragedy, desperation and sadness, with just a hint of hope.

Each queue is different, reflecting the unfolding of agendas, ceremony, treachery, death and escape. A truly wonderful score!
