3.0 out of 5 stars The Idea..., January 27, 2004
This review is from: The Game (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
The Good: "The Chosen One" by Destin Soul was one of the most clever stories out of this book. "The Letter" was hilarious. "Twisted" was a really good story as well. The line in Roy L. Pickering Jr.'s "Mama's Boy" about "Sometimes I think death is scared of me" was very strong dialogue and I liked that story.

The Bad: It may be the editor in me, but some of these stories were almost impossible to get past the editing mistakes, or lack thereof, unless they were as well crafted as stories like "Averted Hearts" by John "Divine G" to the point where the plot outweighed the mistakes. But there were so many careless mistakes like "two ours" instead of "two hours", "you're" instead of "your", "Born" by Shere Washington had endless mistakes (and the story was so disturbing that I had to tell other people about it--the story was well crafted, but man, did it sit a heavy load on my brain!) In "Betrayal" by Chris Foster, you can't have a person speaking with exclamation points and say they have "emotionless demeanor" on top of the story being dry, practical, and too boring to finish. "Comradery" needed editing as well.

Overall: "The Letter" was predictable, but I really liked it. Some stories were so far-fetched that it caught me by surprise. Only a couple were practical, which surprised me because i figured the subject matter was going to be. I really enjoyed this book and all the different aspects to it, but the editor needs to tighten up his/her game, for real because these are careless mistakes!

1.0 out of 5 stars Desperate Sales Attempt, November 19, 2004

This book was a complete let down, the title of the book is completly misleading. A short story is just that a short story, but most of the stories in this book are more like book previews. It seems the purpose of this collection was to increase books sales for the various writers rather that provide interesting short stories. This was a complete waste of time, don't waste your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars it was just okay, February 23, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Game (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
I anticipated reading The Game because of reading previous books by Shannon Holmes, Nikki Turner and Vickie Stringer and really enjoyed their work. But I found this book disappointing. Some stories were good while others were just okay. Some of the stories were too short and predictable. I would still recommend reading the book for the stories by the aboved mentioned authors as well as Tracy Brown, K'wan, Joylynn Jossel, Freeze, and Thomas Long.

3.0 out of 5 stars Triple Crown is Taking Over!, February 9, 2004

This review is from: The Game (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
I have to admit, Triple Crown is basically single handedly bringing the streets into the living rooms of mainstream America. They're changing the game! Flipping the script! Etching a new nitch into the literary world!

In this collection of short stories, Triple Crown sends out a powerful lesson. Though the editing was somewhat shabby, they nevertheless compiled some of the wildest stories the streets have to offer. Some of the authors featured in this book are unpublished, and unheard of. But in spite of this, these young men and women are a sure lock for nation-wide best-seller lists. A few of the standouts are Freeze (definitely - keep working bro!), Thomas Long, Angel Hunter, John Whitfield, and Destin Soul. These authors are the ones who I think made the book what it is because authors like Shannon Holmes, Vickie Stringer, and Kwan were expected to write something spectacular - as they always do.

But all in all, these young authors teamed with these seasoned veterns to pull off a decent publications.

Great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written, January 27, 2004
This review is from: The Game (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
This was the best book ever written about the game. It does not glorify the game at all actually it deters you from the game. It makes you think before you even make that ignorant choice because as Shannon Holmes said THERE ARE NO WINNERS IN THIS GAME ONLY LOSERS !!!!!!!!! Thank you Mr. Holmes and your team of writers for blessing us with real stories about the game. Yes there were a few editing errors. But if you look past that and try to see the message you will be in for a pleasant ride.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just OK, October 28, 2009
This review is from: The Game (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
The only reason I am giving this 2 stars because there were some ok story stories in this book. I am wishing that there was less authors in this book way to many and some was to short to even get the full view of the story until it was over.

But, It has opened me up to finding other authors that I never read. Overall OK.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blame, deceit, fame and not necessarily good retreat., August 25, 2009
This review is from: The Game (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
I loved it. This book had some surprise endings that I really didn't expect being that I was reading with a fictional mind. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down.
