4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the PS2 specifically, but a must have for PSers, October 15, 2000

Anyone who's ever been stuck on a level for hours, and couldn't figure out some stupid clue, couldn't defeat that one (impossible) enemy to get to the next stage.. knows how important this sort of thing is.

This is a must have for all PS1 games.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Not compatible with PSone!, May 16, 2001
This review is from: GameShark Video Game Enhancer (VHS Tape)
Don't make the mistake I did and trust this product's tag line: "For Use With All PlayStation Game Counsels."

Nothing could be further from the truth.

In a true snub to PSone gamers, the Game Shark CDX is not compatible with the new, redesigned PlayStation models. While this game-cheat device may work fine on the older, PSX models, but expect failure -- if not saved game file corruption -- on the PSone.

There was nary a game in my nearly 20-title collection which benefited in any way from the Game Shark CDX. Cheats which touted "infinate life" on Resident Evil 2 REFUSED to function; a code which should have brought me "unlimited gold" in Castlevania NEVER worked; and hacks which should have made Final Fantasy VII a breeze CORRUPTED my saved games.

If I sound bitter, it's because I am. This product was a quick waste of money I could have spent in a hundred better ways.

Suffice to say that I will never again trust any products from Interact.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but could really use improvement, June 14, 2005
This review is from: GameShark Video Game Enhancer (VHS Tape)
Problems with the Gameshark:

1. When downloading new codes, only about 30 games are listed, but on their web site thousands of codes are listed. Why should I spend a half hour with their awkward code-entering system when I paid to be able to download new codes?

2. Many codes do not work in combination with other codes, but there's no way to know which ones will work with which others until you try them and the game won't load.

3. Their web site http://www.gameshark.com/ is the slowest I've seen in years.

4. As I write this, their forums have been down for days. The message is "Sorry, the forums are presently closed for maintenance. Please check back again later." What kind of maintenance takes days, and why don't they say when the maintenance is supposed to be finished so I don't have to keep checking back on their forums page only to be greeted with this frustrating and uninformative message?

5. The disk seems to be poor quality. It sometimes takes about two minutes to load, and it occasionally makes a humming or sort of buzzing sound like it's not balanced well.

Pluses:

1. When the codes work, they are a real Godsend. For example if you want to play Final Fantasy X without having to spend 40 hours mindlessly fighting random battles and leveling up, you can do it with Gameshark.

2. The forums on their web site, when they are up, are a great place for troubleshooting information.

3. They do have codes for a LOT of games on their web site.

Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase, but I do think the company needs to work on the issues I mentioned above.
