4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the PS2 specifically, but a must have for PSers
Anyone who's ever been stuck on a level for hours, and couldn't figure out some stupid clue, couldn't defeat that one (impossible) enemy to get to the next stage.. knows how important this sort of thing is.

This is a must have for all PS1 games.

Don't make the mistake I did and trust this product's tag line: "For Use With All PlayStation Game Counsels."

Nothing could be further from the truth.

In a true snub to PSone gamers, the Game Shark CDX is not compatible with the new, redesigned PlayStation models. While this game-cheat device may work fine on the older, PSX models, but expect failure -- if not saved game file corruption -- on the PSone.

There was nary a game in my nearly 20-title collection which benefited in any way from the Game Shark CDX. Cheats which touted "infinate life" on Resident Evil 2 REFUSED to function; a code which should have brought me "unlimited gold" in Castlevania NEVER worked; and hacks which should have made Final Fantasy VII a breeze CORRUPTED my saved games.

If I sound bitter, it's because I am. This product was a quick waste of money I could have spent in a hundred better ways.

Suffice to say that I will never again trust any products from Interact.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but could really use improvement, June 14, 2005
This review is from: GameShark Video Game Enhancer (VHS Tape)
Problems with the Gameshark:

1. When downloading new codes, only about 30 games are listed, but on their web site thousands of codes are listed. Why should I spend a half hour with their awkward code-entering system when I paid to be able to download new codes?

2. Many codes do not work in combination with other codes, but there's no way to know which ones will work with which others until you try them and the game won't load.

3. Their web site http://www.gameshark.com/ is the slowest I've seen in years.

4. As I write this, their forums have been down for days. The message is "Sorry, the forums are presently closed for maintenance. Please check back again later." What kind of maintenance takes days, and why don't they say when the maintenance is supposed to be finished so I don't have to keep checking back on their forums page only to be greeted with this frustrating and uninformative message?

5. The disk seems to be poor quality. It sometimes takes about two minutes to load, and it occasionally makes a humming or sort of buzzing sound like it's not balanced well.

Pluses:

1. When the codes work, they are a real Godsend. For example if you want to play Final Fantasy X without having to spend 40 hours mindlessly fighting random battles and leveling up, you can do it with Gameshark.

2. The forums on their web site, when they are up, are a great place for troubleshooting information.

3. They do have codes for a LOT of games on their web site.

Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase, but I do think the company needs to work on the issues I mentioned above.

These game codes are from 1999, and ANY or ALL games made AFTER 1999, aren't on this Gameshark!!! DON"T BUY THIS GAMESHARK for the price. The 2002 Gameshark is 5.0 {up to date}. This Gameshark is 3.0 , USELESS!!! { the 3.0 etc. is on the back of the box , on a white sticker}

If you don't have a SCPH-900x series Playstation, do whatever you can to get the Gameshark Pro instead of the CDX. The CDX does not have what is considered to be one of the most essential features of the Pro: the ability to find your own codes, live, as the game is being played. Once you have experienced this power, nothing else compares. If you do have a 900x series unit (with the parallel port removed), consider the product review to be 3.5, *maybe* 4 stars. (Extra warning: If you have an older 100x unit, the CDX is strongly advised against.)

If you can use a GS Pro and find one somewhere, get that while you still can!! They're becoming rare due to popularity, as well as no small amount of politics. Otherwise, the CDX can serve you fairly well...usually. And forget the official website... There is MUCH better available. :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good And Bad, July 19, 2002
This review is from: GameShark Video Game Enhancer (VHS Tape)
i think that this gameshark is very helpful. i mostly use it for Driver 2, but thats just because its the most recent game i bought. All of the other reviews on here state that it freezes the game. for the first 3-4 hours for me, it didnt freeze at all. But then it did. and it wouldnt stop, or let me do anything. and when u have to restart, you lose all your unsaved game settings and data, and you have to reload through the gameshark, just so it can freeze again. i think its worth buying this though, because you probably cant find a better one. I wouldnt recommend buying it used though. If you decide to buy it, then buy it here, or somewhere that has it for the same price, or even less. I would also recomend that u should check to see if gameshark is coming out with a new version, without these glitches.

3.0 out of 5 stars Really Good But..., April 16, 2002

This gameshark is one of the best of its time. Not only does it have codes for you to play your games but you can get new codes for new games off the net. This product would be great except this doesnt work half the time!!! When you type in codes they will most likely not work and when codes work the game freezes up a-lot. Now if gameshark could clean up its act and make something that works 99.9% of the time I would buy this for much more than the price!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre, June 16, 2002
This review is from: GameShark Video Game Enhancer (VHS Tape)
Re-doing my last Review, after working with the program for a little while found its capabilities to be mediocre but not ground breaking. Again, using the codes the have been pre-entered are extremely limiting and some dont even work, causing your game to crash. An improvement I found though not very good is that, yes, you can input codes you have found off the net and such, but too many will automatically freeze the game, whether in 2 minutes or maybe up to an hour, I managed to only get 4 codes I desired onto one game, dont limit yourself, This Gameshark is not the best out there, keep looking is my suggestion.
