Editorial Reviews

Review

"...this is a compelling, emotionally gut-wrenching book that intricately and powerfully weaves the majestic sport of baseball and human emotion in a way few books can." --Josh Dawsey, The Daily Gamecock

About the Author

Travis Haney has covered University of South Carolina sports for The Post and Courier (Charleston, South Carolina) since April 2007. Prior to that, he traveled with the Atlanta Braves, covering more than four hundred Major League games for Morris News Service in two-plus seasons.

Haney, twenty-nine, has won numerous writing awards and had a 2004 feature story published in the Best American Sports Writing series. The 2003 graduate of the University of Tennessee lives in Columbia, South Carolina, and considers the 2010 College World Series the greatest event he has ever covered, thanks in large part to the Gamecocks' dramatic run to the national title.

I am a huge college baseball fan and I loved the book for a variety of reasons. I have been following Hanney's contributions in South Carolina newspapers for years, and he is a great sports writer. This book chronicles the 2011 USC Championship in a style that is reminiscent of the classic, Friday Night Lights. Insightful and inspirational!

I am a huge Gamecock Fan and this book was so well written. It is not only about the great accomplishment of a team but a heart-warming touch of a young person and his family dealing with a terminal illiness. His life had such an impact on the whole entire Gamecock players. I have since ordered additional copies for gifts.
