This is the sixth in a series of recordings which aims at documenting the most significant aspects of the gamelan tradition of Central Java. The repertoire is that of the court of Surakarta whose unmistakable style has for centuries been the inspiration for a great musical culture. This CD features an excellent group comprising both court (Kraton) musicians and players from STSI, the Surakarta conservatory. Particularly impressive on the longest track is the female vocalist, Nyi Cendaniraras, whose performance is countered by the rebab, a two string instrument played with a bow.
Here is a gamelan with such a crystalline sound to resemble an orchestra of birds. The disc looks and sounds great...although gamelan enthusiasts will want to add these recordings to their library, they are also recommended to non-specialists who want to stretch their ears and imagination. --Signal to Noise
