Gamera, June 15, 2000
This review is from: Gamera Complete Box - Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
A lot of folks tend to think Gamera is a Godzilla rip-off. While he really was at first, he really carved out a niche for himself as a kid-friendly monster whose films were accessible to a much younger audience than the Big G's were.
The early music from the Gamera films is pretty intense. Some of the later stuff is a little too cutesy for my taste (but it makes sense considering that these films were aimed at a considerably younger audience).
But if you are an kaiju otaku or at least grew up watching a different monster movie on Saturday afternoons when you were growing up, then this set is a must for your collection.

Choppy but very complete and well-orchestrated., October 3, 2003
This review is from: Gamera Complete Box - Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Actually, if the .gif image above is accurate, this CD collection contains the soundtracks to the three _modern_ Gamera films, not the 60s films. (Although I think disc 2 contains the original Gamera theme song in its extras. It's on one of the discs anyway, and gives an idea how far the music has come... {g})
Packed with extras on each CD (alt tracks, tracks for the ads with and without dialogue); plus extensive liner notes (in Japanese, unfortunately for us mere Englishers).
The music itself increases in complexity and seriousness from movie to movie (unlike the original progression). Each cut is preserved exactly as it was scored for the movie--which means there are sometimes little burps of sound for ten-second scenes, and no transitions of music across scenes.
Definitely worth buying the movies themselves, if you can find them, to see how Godzilla movies (which I personally prefer) _could_ be done: the third movie looks more realistic than the American Godzilla movie (released _afterward_, if I recall correctly), and carries far more emotional weight.
