Book Description

June 21, 1992 0415061555 978-0415061551
The French edition of Jeux pour Acteurs et Non-Acteurs published in 1982 is currently in its seventh edition. For this first translation into English Boal has added new examples and fresh ideas to make it the most up-to-date introduction to the techniques of Image Theatre and Forum Theatre available.
Boal's early work took place under the military regime in Brazil. During a period of exile in Portugal, France, Sweden, Germany, and the US he developed work on combating oppression through theatre. His methods transform theatre from a hierarchical structure where actors are active and audiences passive, to a democratic arena where the spectator becomes the `spectactor', contributing ideas, taking over roles, and using theatre to confront everyday problems, such as sexual harassment, poor pay, homophobia, and racism and find ways of fighting them.
Games for Actors and Non-Actors is a handbook of methods, techniques, games, and exercises designed to help anyone - whether actor or non-actor - rehearse for real life: make the fictional real.

Editorial Reviews

"This is an inspiring and powerful book, a lucid account that will be of substantial use to people already using "Theatre of the Oppressed." It should also act as an excellent introduction for those new to the system." - Artscene

"This is a useful handbook for those who want to explore Boal's 'Theatre of the Oppressed' and as such is greatly to be welcomed. Boals' work deserves and demands emulation." - Theatre Research International

"You have achieved what Brecht only dreamt of and wrote about: making a useful theatre that is entertaining, fun, and instructive. It is a different kind of theatre - a kind of social focuses the mind, relaxes the spirit, and gives people a new handle on their situations." - Richard Schechner

This text represents a valuable introduction to the theories and practice of Augusto Boal. GFA, unlike its predecessor the Theatre of the Oppressed, contains practical exercises as well as an introduction to the important theoretical work of Boal. Boal's major innovations (such as Forum Theatre and Image Theatre) are introduced, discussed, and illustrated with examples, thus effectively allowing the reader to enter into the dialogue of using and refining the techniques. I would recommend this to any performer, artist, educator, or theatre worker who is unfamiliar with the work of Boal, and seeks new methods of understanding and transforming practice, and empowering both audience and participants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Augustus Boal for all ages April 11, 2000

Definitely a must-have in all drama classes. Don't recycle the same old exercises which have nothing to do with the world around us - the work of Boal is accessible and important to students of the theater of all ages.

This is excellent for my improvisation. Adapted the "ritual gesture" for my course. A must-have - honestly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Theatre as a tool for dialogue April 7, 2014
Boal presents the principles and practice of his Theatre of the Oppressed. He believes that the theatre and acting - to perform and to take action - is something that all can participate in. This engagement can lead to a transformation in actors as well as non-actors. Boal shares his approach to actor training which guides the participant through a process that breaks down her habitual approach to movement, voice and sensory awareness. Through repetition of exercises, one explores the senses of feeling, listening and seeing. Boal then shares games and practices of the three forms of theatre that comprise the Theatre of the Oppressed: image theatre (the picture paints a thousand words), forum theatre (rehearsing for reality), and invisible theatre (spect-actors in real life).

This book is more for an acting class. I tried to use some of them in my social studies class. However, many are not applicable.
