This is a welcome new recording from a talented player who has flown under the radar for decades.
For this album, he utilizes an electric guitar accompanied by acoustic piano, bass and drums. In this setting, Boyle's playing is more restrained yet fluid, and has wonderful tone. The compositions are mostly Boyle originals, with two tracks by Chick Corea and Miles Davis.
The sound on the CD is fabulous. Everything is well-miked, balanced and nicely mastered. It's just really enjoyable from start to finish. Kudos to Martin Levan.
The rear cover photo is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Electric Glide artwork; same pose and guitar, just a lot less hair!
For this Japanese release, there are two additional tracks. These sound like they were recorded at another studio, or certainly not the same sessions. The overall volume of those two recordings are lower, and are different in composition and style to the rest of the album. Still, enjoyable.
Hopefully, he'll record more often in the future. A check of his web site shows only dates around the U.K. Perhaps, someday, he'll return to the U.S. for some shows.
