I bought this because the standard vinyl rollup board I've had for years always unrolls with "memory," meaning it doesn't really lay flat. Also, because it's a cloth material on the bottom, it doesn't do so well around stains and other various goobers it may be placed on. It still works fine, it's just a little gross.

Enter this silicone chess mat. I can fold it up to transport and it takes up less space in my bag, yet it still rolls out flat. Awesome. I can spill stuff on it then rinse it off under water. Sweet. The size of the squares is great and the text is clear and easy to read. Right on.

Consider, though, that this IS made of thin silicone. Therefore, it's going to be more susceptible to piercing (don't play on top of forks, knives, or rocks!) Additionally, it's a bit more "grippy" when compared to your traditional mousepad-style or vinyl mats, so not only do the pieces not slide as smooth, but it hangs onto hair, dust, and other small particles better (although easily rinsed, as mentioned above).

I knew the pros and cons before I bought it. I still bought it. I've been very happy with it.

Hi,

I bought this board some time back, and I have played on this board on and off, in the local chess circuit.

Pros:
Its light, so easy to carry. Lines are sharp and looks pretty. The board is fine for casual play. Does not get creased due to rolling up or folding. So its ideal in that sense.

Cons:
Some people mentioned the surface to be sticky, that's right, its made of silicone, the same material that probably your ipod/iphone case is made of. Thats the only drawback and the deal killer for me personally :) So it has a lot of friction, and if one is used to the vinyl boards where the felt padded chess pieces glide, this is going to be one nasty surprise. Almost every tournament player slides the pieces and this becomes even more important in 5 min blitz games. Also a standard 90 min game eventually becomes blitz in the last 10 mins...

So these days, I use this board only for analysis or some casual coffee house play. Not sure if its a good idea to buy one board for analysis and another for tournaments. I like to practice on the same board that I will use in the tournament. But for some people it may not be an issue.

In conclusion, I dont use it for the reason I bought it, I just thought the reader/shopper should know this. If you are not much into sliding pieces, this is good buy for you.

This silicone chess mat is incredible! Great looking (green and white squares)! Scrunch it up and throw it in a bag and take it to your club/tournament - take it out of the bag and it rolls out completely flat (exactly as advertised). The only negative is that it picks up lint/dust fairly easily because the silicone material is slightly tacky. It cleans up easily with a wet towel. This is really a fantastic chess mat for the casual or serious player.

I love this board as it will fit into almost any space, it just crumples up because it is so flexible. It lays flat as well, again because it flexes flat. Kudos. I have tried vinyl, mouse-pad and this silicone board; they all have their pluses and minuses, mouse-pads soak up stains, vinyls can feel cheap, I like this one the best. I really like it because I don't need a special chess bag to carry around my set, I just use a regular old Craftsman soft sided $15 tool bag and toss all of my stuff in there. Now the minor flaw, it attracts lint from time to time so it needs a cleaning if you want a pristine board.

This silicone board is much "floppier" than vinyl boards and lays instantly flatter. The pieces grip the surface, but may still be slid to re-position. The board may also be rotated with the pieces staying in place better than a vinyl board. It may also be rolled tighter than vinyl, and crumbled and stuffed in a large pocket without damage. It does attract dust, but is easily cleanable, and virtually indestructible. More expensive, but worth it to me, and probably worth it to most frequent players.

Great size for regulation pieces. Lays flat and has a kind of a grabby surface so the pieces don't slide around on their own. I own a couple of regulation wooden boards, but I can put this on our boat and not worry about humidity damage. Coupled with some bakelite pieces, I am set.

Got this board and triple weighted chess pieces for my son. Great board! Feels thicker than it actually is. pieces don't slide but grip to this board. Makes for a very nice feeling when playing. the board is larger than I visualized before ordering, but glad I got it!

We bought this for our daughter to learn the game of chess. She loves being able to use it so mobile and it is light weight. Easy to clean up by just rolling and storing. Excellent delivery time. Very impressed and happy with our purchase
