3.0 out of 5 stars Did not work well for me
This book came with high praise and I was expecting something that would keep me glued to my reading chair for hours. Somehow that did not happen.

Yes, there is a lot of action, but apart from the final showdown (I won't say what it is, but what a great idea !) I wasn't really gripped. The villain gets lucky to many times for my taste and the book drags on for too...

Yes, there is a lot of action, but apart from the final showdown (I won't say what it is, but what a great idea !) I wasn't really gripped. The villain gets lucky to many times for my taste and the book drags on for too long in the middle. I mean, if the good guys are preparing to catch the bad guy and you're only halfway through the book, it's quite obvious that things will not go as planned.

The last hundred pages are brilliant, but it took me awfully long to get there and I was ready to give up a couple of times in between.

I should probably mention that I don't like reading Tom Clancy either, so maybe it's just not my kind of genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book that has movie written all over it!, August 2, 1999

Move over Tom Clancy - O'reilly blows you away! For you folks whom like Clancy and all the authors like him - just stop and read any of this authors work and you will see superior writing than all the rest! Hollywood wake the hell up and make this into a movie! This makes Die Hard look sleepy.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars for some Original Action, April 24, 2000
This review is from: Games of the Hangman (Paperback)
This was basically a decent book but 25% of it could have easily been left on the editor's floor with no loss to the plot. It was an entertaining enough thriller, but it truly dragged on......I mean how many trained "Expert" killers can actually MISS killing the hero in one book?

If you are looking for a realistic thriller, this may not be your bag. If you like a little far-fetched screenplay material ala Rambo meets Dirk Pitt, then you will probably enjoy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I've read in the Last 5 Years!!, August 15, 2006
This review is from: Games of the Hangman (Paperback)
Move over Tom Clancy - O'reilly is simply a class above!
If I could buy the screeenplay and produce the movie, I would!
Has multiple Oscars written all over it! Recommended to all serious readers of the genre. The Hangman's most lethal weapon is his use of unbridled sex and sex appeal. This is a very deep, psychologically complex, action thriller. You'll stay up alll nite! The final battle is EPIC; you the reader find yourself engaged in a life and death struggle of unimaginable intensity. This book is a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, July 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Games of the Hangman (Paperback)
I enjoyed this so much I've purchased the rest of Mr. O'Reilly's books. Am on the second one now with the third waiting in the wings. You should read this series in order; even though each one stands on its own, the stories make more sense.

"Games of the Hangman" is slow starting, but once it gets going, it doesn't stop until you close the book. It is well worth the money and the search for this out-of-print book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Put it down, I dare you!, June 16, 2001

A droll wit and strong characters pepper this fast-paced, well written premiere work. Hugo Fitzduane (picture Pierce Brosnan), a man who has had his fill of war and violence, is drawn into the world of international terrorism. The various heros and villains are well sculpted, the violence both drastic and graphic, and the scenery in which this sprawling sage is set is beautifully described without belaboring the detail to a point where it becomes distracting. Action abounds. The classic struggle between good and evil is alive and well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler all rolled up into one magnificent book!, November 16, 2010

From page one, you can't put this book down. It's so easy to identify with the characters and become involved in the plot. The ending is pure genious! If you like Cussler and Clancy, you will LOVE Victor O'Reilly. Fitzduane is incredible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Need more....Please!, July 14, 2010
Games of the Hangman is a very good book; actually it's excellent. After finishing it I went out and bought the other corresponding books containing the same main character. They too were excellent. If you like Clancy, Child or Hunter then you need to pick up Victor's books.
I only have one problem...Victor, why have you quit writing? I know you have not kicked the bucket as I feared, but seem busy working with the government as some sort of consultant. They must be paying you good as you have a talent, no a gift for developing quite a character. You could make millions as Clancy has. I still see the blogs & notice your fans have not given up on you. Write more. We need it. Yeah, and sign up for Kindle downloads.

2.0 out of 5 stars This one is a Reach, April 27, 2007
This review is from: Games of the Hangman (Paperback)
Does not exactly live up to it's billing. There are a lot of stretches in this book. This is not a book that is going to have you staying up all night reading.
