Book Description

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?  Not this time.  Not by a long shot.

See, I'm usually the one who solves problems, being that I'm a minister and all. Yes, you heard it right. I might not look like one - i.e. rounded on all the right edges and a propensity to wearing clothes showing a smidge of cleavage. And it's true if you've heard that I have Victoria's Secret's site as my homepage.

Like it or not, that's me, Pastor Jane Angieski. I'm fully licensed, fully educated, and fully confused most of the time.

Truth is that if I could have just resisted the lure of dark chocolate I'd have stayed happily ignorant about sex slaves, black-market babies, cheatin' preachers, and an assortment of lowlifes that have intruded on my cluttered, fluttered, and frazzled life. And with that restraint, I would never have been rejected, arrested, and nearly exterminated. Or fallen in love. But wait, like always, I'm getting ahead of the story and how it all happened.

The breath-defying pace of the novel zings through a series of escapades worthy of a plus-size preaching protagonist in one of lisa Lutz's Spellman novels.  Can Pastor Jane Angieski keep her nose out of trouble, her heart from hurting and her fantasies away from the handsome Antonio Banderas-looking Las Vegas Police Captain Tom Morales?  Does she really want to?

Only Pastor Jane can multi-task the problems in store for her with the help of dark chocolate and plenty of Starbucks in hand.

Sensuality Level: PG rated; Christian mystery with a serving of romance.

Review

<p>''What a fun read! Eva Shaw blends strong characters with an insightful, contemporary Christian message weaving in this beguiling mystery/romance. <i>Games of the Heart</i> showcases her oh-so-readable style.'' --Debbie Macomber, #1 <i>New York Times</i> Bestselling Author</p><p>''Good fiction takes us to unexpected places. That’s what happened to me when I read Eva Shaw’s charming and poignant <i>Games of the Heart</i>. I laughed out loud, but there was a serious side to this mystery with a bit of romance. I recommend it.'' --Anjali Banerjee, author of <i>Haunting Jasmine</i> and <i>Enchanting Lily</i>.</p><p> ''What a treat it was to read <i>Games of the Heart</i>. I’m a huge fan of romance novels. My favorites are those that blend romance and mystery with topics that spark thoughts and leave me wishing that the book didn’t end. Eva has created that perfect combination. I am convinced that her brilliant Games of the Heart will be a best seller.'' --Sheila T. Cluff, Owner/Founder, The Oaks at Ojai, author of <i>Sit, Strengthen & Stretch</i> and <i>Take 5: How You Can Benefit from Just Five Minutes of Daily Exercise</i>; columnist of <i>Fit for Life</i></p>

From the Author

<p>This book came about after reading an article in the <i>San Diego Union Tribune</i> about black market adoption schemes where profit-hungry companies sold "return" policies to adoptive parents. These unscrupulous companies were "selling" toddlers to prospective parents without disclosing their hidden and heartbreaking mental challenges to cash in on the exorbitant return option. I couldn't get it out of my head or my heart.</p><p>Then I learned about the squalor found in many eastern European orphanage and women kept as sex slaves to produce "made-to-order" babies sold to Americans. Sure I could have written an article about the crimes, but I wanted to show the faces and hearts involved. A novel with plenty of mystery and a quirky protagonist that could me you smile became the vehicle of choice.</p><p>I started writing as soon as I could hold a pencil. At eight, I wrote <i>The Teddy Bear Trilogy</i>. For a long time, especially when I was a shy, bookworm teenager, I only "wrote" novels in my mind, but boy what elaborate scenes. Because of an undiagnosed hearing loss and two strong-willed sisters as a middle child, I found comfort in reading. It was about this time, too, that I started talking with my characters and asking them what they wanted to tell in a story. Sounds a tad psychotic, but most writers do this and I continue to do it with each novel.</p><p>I think of you, the reader, with each word I write. I work to spin characters that you love or love to hate. For the main characters, I strive to build heroines and heroes that make you want to know them better and make you miss them as the last page is finished. </p><p>As a writer, I need the story to carry you along. I don't want to interrupt you from thinking, "Now what in the world did the writer have in mind?" I believe good fiction writers should be nonexistent. You don't want to know me. I'm boring. You want to know the people in my books. You want to be involved in what's making them laugh, angry, fall in love or do something you've always wanted to attempt. That's what I want for you, too.</p><p>I hope that Jane, Tom, Gramps, Harmony and yes, Tuffy, too, come to life for you. I hope, too, that if you dream of writing a novel, memoir or nonfiction book, you'll do it. Now is a great time to start.</p>

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo! August 25, 2012
By MaryAnn
Format:Kindle Edition
"Games of the Heart" is beyond wonderful. Eva amazingly combines romance and humor with trafficking babies. This wildly funny comedy will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what Pastor Jane will say next. Quirky doesn't begin to describe her. Take a break from the ordinary and spend a few days with Pastor Jane, she'll keep you smiling... BIG.

I can see "my teacher, Eva" in so many places, it gave me warm fuzzies. Eva writes what she teaches... or teaches what she writes, either way, she is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Unusual Heroine Worth Meeting October 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Eva Shaw's Games of the Heart contains believable characters that are both a little "out there" and totally relatable. Pastor Jane's unexpected comments and thought patterns keep this book moving, and wondering what she's going to make of the next situation, person, or chocolate that comes up next to Jane showcases Dr. Shaw's sense of humor and amazing sense of timing. I found myself wondering in these situations what I'd be saying to Jane, maybe over chocolate, her fave - or to her Grandfather, Senator Geraldine, Pastor Bob (Ab)Normal or any other of the supporting cast and I know I've been transported into the plot. Dealing with human trafficing is not an easy subject, and putting it at the base of this mystery brought up other points, so even as I laughed at Jane's antics, the book made me think. So there you have it: for me, being transported, having something to think about, and laughing all made Games of the Heart terrific.

4.0 out of 5 stars Birthing an unrecognized bright star! January 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a diamond in the rough story from a undetected as of yet, very talented writer! She has it all, an easily embraced heroin with a sense of humor, fulfilling her life's chosen profession of teaching love, sharing lessons learned all the while winning hearts, changing lives, kicking butts and changing the world for the future of children everywhere! Wow! Pull up a chair and jump in with booth feet! It will take your troubles away and leave the lingering taste of chocolate in your mouth! Just forgive the author her choice of editors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Games of the Heart is a Winner December 21, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you have the blues, Eva Shaw has the cure in this thoroughly delightful read. Make yourself a cup of tea, curl up on the couch, and enter the world of Pastor Jane, where you will find yourself laughing out loud in no time at all. Pastor Jane, outspoken youth minister for a Las Vegas mega church has a heart as ample as her bosom and somehow manages to handle misguided youth and her depressed, rhinestone cowboy grandfather, plan vacation bible school and assist the police with an investigation into, as she so aptly puts it, "sex slaves, baby machines and faith based swindlers." With a cast of quirky, but (mostly) lovable characters and with a superb ability to turn a phrase (my favorite being "...the stubbed toe crack clipped a nick close to the quick..."), Eva takes you on a roller-coaster ride that leaves you breathless, but wanting more. They are characters you want to meet again, and I sincerely hope Eva Shaw has more adventures in store for Pastor Jane and her entourage. We all need a good belly laugh now and then, don't we? For as Pastor Jane says," Isn't life a hoot in the patootie?" Games of the Heart is a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book! October 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I love this book! I think what I like most about it is Pastor Jane's well intentioned quirks. In my life I am forever intending right but saying it wrong; and intending sensitive but appearing not so. I see Pastor Jane often intending it different. I love that. She is just like us - imperfect - but keeps pluggin away. And she is not afraid to take on difficult issues, as Eva Shaw also shows no fear. I look forward to hearing more from Pastor Jane and from Eva Shaw.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done! September 10, 2012
By Alice
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Thank you for drawing attention to a serious issue using humor, wit, and a likeable cast of characters. I can't count the number of times I found myself chuckling out loud, and then explaining to people in the room, "I'm reading about human trafficking." It's an interesting combination--human trafficking and humor--but Dr. Shaw pulls it off brilliantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful! August 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Love it! Hilarious, fast-paced, and built around believable characters. Eva Shaw brought attention to a real-life issue, and did so in a way that didn't feel weighted and depressing. I was eager to turn each page to see what silly situation Pastor Jane would get herself into next. What a delight!

5.0 out of 5 stars What fun! October 9, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I love a good laugh and yet rarely do I do so when I read. Well that has all changed. Games of the Heart had me chuckling out loud throughout.

Is it a romance? Yes. Is it a mystery? Yes. Is it entertaining? Oh yes. Does it have any serious subject matter? Well to quote the famous philosopher, Snoop Dogg, "Mos def!" Eva Shaw weaves though-provoking content with sheer hilarity, and she does so seamlessly.

It's easy to write about characters with barely a flaw, but Eva Shaw creates characters with a plethora of shortcomings, and yet we fall in love with them. And if we're honest, we see ourselves in bits and pieces of them too.

I look forward to reading more from Eva Shaw!
