Book Description

May 1995 9 and up4 and upHistoric Communities
Bobbie Kalman's acclaimed Historic Communities Series provides a close-up view of how people lived more than two hundred years ago. Colorful photos, many taken by Bobbie Kalman herself at restored historic villages across the country, help support the fascinating information. Children will have fun learning about:
-- early homes and the settler community
-- what people wore and the crafts they made
-- how settlers made their living
-- how they spent their leisure time
-- the values, customs, and traditions of the early settlers

Games were often used as an important tool in teaching children how to behave in society. Games from Long Ago shows how games played a role in teaching morality, such as the board game "Errand Boy" which taught the value of hard work. Games featured include:
-- parlor games, word and guessing games, and classroom games
-- games of skill such as ring-taw, shuttlecock, and shinny
-- board games, such as checkers and backgammon

Editorial Reviews

Review

Games form long ago belongs in every library as a resource for student projects and will certainly be a welcome addition to a child's personal collection -- Canadian Children's Literature, 1995

This is another excellent book from the series Historic Communities, which gives a fine, easy-to-read overview of children's games from 19th century North America. Entertaining, with colored illustrations on every page, this book would be an enjoyable resource for any elementary or junior high student studying the history of everyday life in North America -- L. Estabrooks, Gordon Bell High School, Jan. 1996

Taken from Chapter 3: Guessing games Charades Charades is a fun game to play when people come to visit. Players take turns being the actor. Each player writes down a word, name, or phrase on a piece of paper and puts it in a hat. The first actor takes a piece of paper from the hat. He or she must act out the mystery word or phrase within one or two minutes. Sometimes the actor gives clues such as pulling on an ear, a gesture that means "sounds like," and then acts out a word that rhymes with the word on the paper. The player who guesses the word or phrase is the next actor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make some family values history with your children!, September 21, 2007

Children and adults will be tremendously entertained by Bobbie Kalman's book which is destined to become a treasured possession in your household.

Some of the games require nothing but imagination, like "Pinch, No Smiling," Charades, I Have a Basket and Taboo.

Families might especially enjoy the Work Party games, which make shared chores more fun. I wish I could give this book TEN stars!

I absolutely love it, and you will, too. Buy extra copies for gift-giving! Let's spread the joy around.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for, June 18, 2008
By
I really wanted a book of games and rules that would have been played in colonial/pioneer times. This book has it to some degree, but it's in a story form that you have to lift the games out of. I wasn't very impressed.
