Editorial Reviews

Games People Play and Joe South are two classic country-soul albums well ahead of their time. Known primarily as a session man (Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Bob Dylan) JOE SOUTH had shown his song writing ability since the late 1950's. Games People Play (UK #6/US #12, 1969) made him a bona-fide star. The LP of the same name was an electrifying blend of southern soul and country with deft dabs of rock and psychedelia. His 4th album, Joe South (1970), was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1970 with the Atlanta Rhythm Section further demonstrating his skill as both a gifted songwriter and rootsy singer with an exceptional voice. These two albums showcase a unique talent: Joe South, the man who blazed the path of country rock'n'soul. With three rare bonus tracks including the simmering psychedelic 'Soul Raga' by South's band The Believers, this 24 track, 75 minute '2-for-1' is extraordinary value.

In this, the second of three two album on one cd's released by Australian reissue label Raven, Joe South is at the absolute top of his game. Both albums contain songs that were hits for South in some cases and by others in most cases. The disc has 3 bonus tracks, 2 of which were released as by The Believers, who were in fact South's backing band, and included his brother Tommy on drums and sister in law Barbara on keyboards. South's distinct guitar and voice are on display here at the height of his fame as a songwriter supplying hits for numerous artists. From the opening notes of the first track on the disc the listener is in for a treat. South not only writes great music, but his lyrics are often insightful and comment on society around him. The songs from on this disc will be familiar to fans of late 60s, early 70s rock and roll. "Games People Play" was a big hit for South himself. "Hush" a smash for Deep Purple, "Birds of a Feather" for Paul Revere and the Raiders, "Rose Garden" for Lynn Anderson, "Yo Yo" for the Osmonds of all people, and the list goes on. However, as is so often the case, the original versions are quite superior. South guitar work shines throughout. And his distinct voice is filled with emotion. Recorded before South's personal life was shattered by the suicide of his brother Tommy, these albums are chock full of South's brand of "Atlanta Sound" rock, being a pleasant mixture of country, soul, and rock, and in South's case the lyrics are introspective and contain commentary on society in the difficult years of the Viet Nam War. All of South's Capitol albums, 6 total, are available on 2 on 1 discs from Raven and are all absolutely essential to any collector of later 60s, early 70s rock and roll.Read more ›

kevin d. rathert has it exactly correct. the other two reviewers get the whole vibe this giant of american song-writing gave off in his heartfelt songs. jimmy webb and link wray (wray's three track shack cd reissue)are similarly-gifted. in the 1970's, lps were either way too costly, or ridiculously cheap - depending on nearby store policies/selection, fad-driven pricing, cut-out bargains, and timing. if you waited, some prices would drop while others would climb away from affordability. it was a time when you'd go without food a couple days just to get that potentially-great find. >>>tearing off the plastic, extracting the lp, and dropping it onto the turntable were rituals so exquisite when the record exploded into the ears and mind. then, playing it for others was the road test for the truth and quality of our musical taste. joe south exemplified all those intricate activities in his songs. the mind would relax and feel deep down home and locale as part of itself. weird and wonderful without undue sensation. a true mystic and guru when he gave us his concept of folk-pop. modesty and talent combined make for greatness that meets eternity. >>>this artist had listening down so well, his songs could teach that quality cooly, calmly and delicately. its no accident that jimi hendrix and roy buchanan made so much from south's simple blues tune, 'hey joe'. sarcasm and critique done through music in a gentle way; oscar wilde would have seen a kindred spirit. fit at least one well-reviewed joe south cd into your collection and see how your perspective on your taste in music subtly alters. make this guy better known by music-lovers, but most of all find the faith in society and one's home that comes through consistently and with love.

Joe South's artistry is distinct. His deeply-felt lyrics and his feel for subtle hooks make him a singer-songwriter deserving a serious reappraisal. Much has been made, and rightly, of South's many accomplishments as a producer and as a studio musician. Listening to his albums is always a pleasure. Joe South's songs show he was always able to think and groove. This two album collection sounds great. Also highly recommended: South's terrific and innovative "A Look Inside." I hope at some point soon we will have a Joe South boxed-set.
