About the Author

Frank Aycox, teacher, therapist, recreation leader and author, grew up playing street games in Philadelphia in the early forties. Thirty years later he casually played similar games with students in a Philadelphia school as a consultant from the local Community Mental Health Center. The troubled students responded so favorably to the games that he developed a more extensive and systematic body of social games which teachers could use to cultivate positive classroom behaviors. After several years of successfully leading social games, Mr. Aycox became intrigued as to how and why the play brought about positive behavioral changes in students. This book is the culmination of his discoveries, research, and experience.

Mt. Aycox spent several years as a middle school science teacher and taught Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure as a Teaching Associate at Temple University where he received a M.Ed. in Therapeutic Recreation. He worked ten years as a therapist in several inpatient agencies serving children and adolescents. Mr. Aycox was formerly Director of Expressive Arts Therapies at Northwestern Institue of Psychiatry in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, and is a past Board Member of the Eastern Cooperative Recreation School.

Mr. Aycox leads seminars and inservices on the theory and practice of Social Play for family service, community mental health agencies, schools and colleges over wide areas of the country. He has trained recreational specialists of the YMCA, and has conducted assembly programs for hundreds of shcools throughout the United States.

Mr. Aycox's background in teaching, recreation, and therapy is a unique blend of knowledge and experience which has enabled him to create a social, cultural, play system that he feels is the perfect social skills curriculum for use in the contemporaty school.

In 1995, Mr. Aycox founded Playcorp, Inc., a consulting firm that applies Social Play techniques not only to the eduation process but to the work place culture of businesses and social service agencies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for All Teachers, January 14, 2000

This review is from: Games We Should Play In School (Paperback)
I have used the first edition of this book for many years. I had two copies, both of which I had loaned to other teachers so much that I lost track of them. I have used and adapted the games for K through college level and incorporated various subject matter in addition to the original purpose of the games. It is a great resource!
