Product Description

From the Manufacturer

For two bleak decades the Undead reavers of Count Noctilus have plagued the oceans of the world. After each raid, the Dreadfleet disappears into its lair as quickly and silently as it appeared, far from the reach of Man. And yet there remains hope. Captain Jaego Roth of the Heldenhammer has vowed to hunt down and destroy Count Noctilus and his Undead captains once and for all. With him sail the most notorious and cunning of the pirate lords of Sartosa, each borne to battle upon a giant warship bristling with cannons, organ guns and bolt throwers. At the stroke of midnight on Geheimnisnacht, most forsaken of nights, the Heldenhammer and her companions sail into the realm of undeath known as the Galleon's Graveyard. One by one, Count Noctilus and his vile allies move in to stop them. Dreadfleet is a boxed game for two (or more) players that includes everything you need to make war on the turbulent seas of the Warhammer world. At your command are two fleets of ships: the Dreadfleet led by the Vampire Count Noctilus, aboard his gargantuan sea-hulk the Bloody Reaver; and the Grand Alliance commanded by the Pirate Captain Jaego Roth, who recently stole the Heldenhammer – the pride of the Imperial Fleet, and one of the largest galleons to ever sail the high seas. As your ships engage in furious battle, it's down to you, the fleet captain, to make important split-second decisions. Do you bring all guns to bear on the closest enemy warship, or do you sail into position for a furious broadside? What happens when the warship catches fire, or worse, the powder kegs ignite? Exactly how much punishment can your warship take before it sinks without a trace? Are those Undead seagulls or flying piranha fish? And, when all else fails, do you have the courage to ram your foe, board their ship, and engage them in a duel to the death?

OK this is a Games Workshop boardgame, meant for teens/adults, so to star ratings I give it are based on my perception that in the Toy section I wouldn't want someone to misunderstand what they are buying. A 2 in durability is because the game pieces are multi-piece miniature model ships that have to be built and glued together and hand painted, so if you are lookign for a fun boardgame for your five year old, move along.

OK, now to the real review. Games Workshop as usual has produced a game with jsut stunning miniatures here. The ships and other pieces are jsut fantastically detailed and if you enjoy painting miniatures you will have a blast customizing your game. Many of the pieces feature extremly fine plastic rigging and masts so you have to be careful de-spruing and putting them together.

The "board" is a great cloth map ocean that looks great on the table, we throw a peice of plexiglass over it when we play (sort of like with the Chessex gae mats). I am at a little bit of a loss to compare the gameplay to other GW games, I guess I'd say it's a little more like Gothic than their warhammer games, but it is its own system. I'd suggest reaqding the rules through and playing a skrimmage game against yourself afte ryou get it to get a handle on the rules before playing a match with a friend to help speed along the learning curve.

I think they really created a neat new game and hope they do an expansion with some crazy new ships.

Prepare thyself for a lot of painting! This set is typical of Games Workshop in that models are unassembled and unpainted (allowing the gamer nearly complete control of the look of their game). This game is a lot of fun and the game mechanics are simple enough to master in just a few turns. The rulebook helps by building scenarios that almost act as tutorials to the game (starting with very small battles of one-on-one and growing from there). The backdrop is a beautifully rendered cloth seascape with an ornate border for placing markers for the unpredictable winds that plague this roiling sea. Overall the models are consistent with the high quality you can expect from Games Workshop. The cloth backdrop is a bit light weight (allowing it to have great detail of color), but allowing it also to get pushed up and wrinkled a bit during game play (with some practice and discipline this is almost a moot issue). It would be nice for GW to offer a painted set as the game seems so worth getting right into playing. Perhaps that is their insiduous plan to get you to paint fervishly until you are ready to take sea for battle. Overall 5 stars for quality and gameplay (it is fun and doesn't seem to be bogged down in rules and mechanics). Expect price point to fluctuate across the market as supplies get limited or the game goes out of print.

If you have people to play with, it's great, if not, well, it's still fun. The ships are unpainted, as with all Games Workshop stuff, but the map is a really nice piece in person, and that's in full color. The ratings for education and durability are justified at five stars given that it is small bits of plastic (not for little kids), so that's the context it's judged on. If you use it as a ramp for a BMX bike, not so much. Sneaky way to get kids to learn math too.

If you're kid or hubbie likes Warhammer, they'll probably like this. If they play Risk and like nautical themes, they'll like it. If they liked Pirates of the Caribbean and play other board games, they'll probably like it too. Frankly, this is the only warhammer related gift you can give where you know they don't already have it and it's still welcome vs. being the "wrong" set.

If your local game shop doesn't have it, give it a go here.
