Mermaid Beach is a fun family game suitable for play for kids 6 yr. and older. The game was invented by a 9 yr. old girl and is full of the imagination that we all had at that age (for example, play begins with the person with the "waviest" hair playing first). The artwork is fun and original, the game play is fast, and the rules are easily understood. The object of the game is to collect the most shells, and avoid the ugly sea monsters. You collect shells by turning in matching beach cards, discarding a mean mermaid card and taking a shell card from another player, or asking another player to match a beach card you are holding. The game teaches counting and matching, and plays like a cross between Go Fish, Old Maid, and Rummy and is truly fun to play for the whole family!

This game was a flop. Try other games by Gamewright like Rat-a-tat Cat (our favorite) or even Sleeping Queens (for girls) instead. We also just discovered the game Spot It which was quite fun, even for adults. Mermaid Beach never seemed to play out well and there was just no skill or suspense to keep my 6 or 8 year old interested for more than a couple games. There needs to be some major adjustments to this game to make it a keeper. Great packaging but lacking on the inside!

Is this the best Gamewright game? No. Is it a good game? Sure. The illustrations are nice, my daughters love the shiny Mermaids/Mermen. I play the full version with my 8 yr old and simply take out the sneaker waves and mean mermaids for my 4 yr old. It's her new favorite. I like games that I don't mind playing with them, and this is quick, simple and fun. Yes, it isn't quite as fun as Sleeping Queens, Three of a Crime or Frog Juice (which my little one can't play unassisted, anyway) but compared to Go Fish, Old Maid or even Uno, the added variables make it fantastic! :-)

We really love Gamewright games in our house! When our family received a gift certificate to Amazon this Christmas our 4 children (ages 2-9) decided to spend it acquiring new Gamewright games, most of them teach great strategy and critical thinking skills. This one is just OK, and seems to lack the strategy that makes so many others so much fun.

Here are my issues with the game:
-The luck of the draw can make this game end after only a couple of rounds. That is kind of no fun as you have to shuffle two decks... and the game feels like it was over before it began.
-There is a random sea monster that you can only pass to an opponent when you draw a card that says to pass. There is no way to defend against it or set it down. It diminishes your total points if you hold it at the end and reduces the # of playable cards you can play with as it sits there in your hand. Why? It Could be omitted.
- once face cards are played out kids wind up playing a version of "go fish" to match their beach ball, umbrella, etc. cards. Why? Why not just play the mindless go-fish? (and do away with a pointless sea monster!)
- While my kids like it, they don't love it. After only a few times playing they will exchange it for another. Sleeping Queens & Rat-a-tat-cat, however can keep them going for a loooong time.
- If you are at the beach or having a beach-themed even they are cute, but not my first choice as there are many other just awesome Gamewright games out there!

My 6 year old daughter loves this game. It is very well made, and the illustrations on the cards are very well done.

The game is sort of a combination of old maid and go fish, but has its own twists.

It goes pretty fast, so it's easy to sit down and play a quick game without a huge time commitment.

It's also really cool that it was created by an 8 year old!

We're very happy with our purchase, and would highly recommend this game to families.

We have purchase many games by Gamewright and for the most part have been very pleased. This game is probably our least favorite so far. Instead of a clear ending it just kind of fizzles out. We bought it to keep at our beach house and so there it will go and I can't say we will be missing having it at home.

It seems like there is too much going on here, and no real strategy. Sometimes the game lasts 3 rounds, sometimes we get stuck in endless loops. My kids don't get it, neither do I. Love other gameright games like sleeping queens and frog juice. This one is a dud.
