My son (6 years old) loves this game. It is the one that he asks to play most often. We read the book by L. Keller first (although it is not a requirement to play the game). If you do read the book however, it explains why all of the states are scrambled and why they have to be sent home. The game requires that you can read. You need to be able to read the name of the state, the state's capital and it's nickname. During the course of the name you will need to locate, for example, any state in your current pile, which has a capital which has 3 or more syllables. The player who can locate the state in his/her pile that match the specified criteria first, can send the state home. The player with the most states sent home at the end of the game wins!

I am a sucker for slipping in education when kids aren't looking! This game gets participants noticing everything from colors, ABC's order, comparisons and contrasts (looking at the states individual details as well as the map as a whole), to measurement skills and to syllables and sneaks in US Geography too! My not yet reading 5 y.o. is able to play his own hand after two weeks of the game in the house!!! (We all help eachother anyway). Absolutely no prior US knowledge needed as all questions are based on the map and cards in the deck. (Even my adult English language learners enjoyed the challenge of practicing the language concepts to "prove" how much language they have mastered---or not!!! :) The fun definately overrides the "drag" of studying geography with this game, but the more facts you learn the better chance you have to WIN, so motivation is high to keep learning!!! Great value for the price, too.

I originally bought this game for my classroom, but I brought it home this summer to play with my kids. I play this game all the time with my 7 year old. It is fun for both adults and kids (who can read). My son also has learned the states, an added bonus!

We bought this game after our kid was given Scrambled States 2 (also a great game). We loved it so much, we wanted to try this game too. Everyone in the family loves it. Kids, parents, grandparents -- we've all enjoyed playing it together. We all learn from it, and don't even realize it. We loved it so much we bought several more and gave them away as Christmas presents.

Best Tool for Learning States and Capitals,

I tried a bunch of different ways to teach states and capitals (especially as the educational system deems this most important) and no method is as painless and fun as this game is. In fact this game actually teaches kids better than memorization does (gee I wonder why!). No get me wrong, geography is very important but sometimes I wonder if we don't overemphasize memorization over actual learning and understanding. This game is the way to go in teaching states and capitals and they will retain the information for a much longer period of time. Lots of fun!

I have begun homeschooling this year and was looking for some games that were fun but still had an educational value to them. This game is great! Our whole family has enjoyed it. Awesome tool for helping to teach your kiddos about the states, capitals, and where they are located on the map. I would highly recommend this game to everyone.

I bought this game for my daughter three years ago when she was in first grade. This is the BEST game for learning where all the states are and also for memorizing capitals. Now in fourth grade there are map tests and she zips right through them. The game is also fun and it is one of my favorites to play with her.
The Scrambled States book is also a must have. The little side comments are the funniest things you will read in any kid's book.

This is the game my nine year old son brings out when it is game time as his favorite. I have to admit that I've never been really up on my geography, so this has helped all of us review the locations, capitals and nicknames of the fifty states. After playing it repeatedly, some of the "challenge" cards start to get repetitive, so I do wish there were more (or a booster pack) to help keep the game fresh. A single game goes by pretty quickly, and can be easily adapted for younger kids or beginners (just let anyone who meets the criteria in the challenge card win the card, rather than just the person who puts down their card first). You have our recommendation!

THis is a really fun game. I wasn't sure if my 9 yr old would find it fun. I often find her and her friends playing. She is learning and doesn't even realize. Great game and very much recommended, especially for 3rd and 4th graders.

Wow...my kids LOVE this game!! They started playing it when they were 2 and 4 years old. They are now 4 and 6 and have the entire map of the U.S. memorized and with no effort, just FUN! Of all the games in our home (and there are a lot) this is the game most played. At 2 1/2 years old my son could point to any U.S. map and tell you the state and it's capital because of this game. That is AMAZING! Over time, we have made up a few of our own little rules to make it more fun and crazy, but it is great and now I am buying it for all my nephews and neice because they have played it and want it too. Highly recommend!
