We're a game-playing family and recently decided to give Hula Hippos a try. Boy, are we glad we did!
The game is simple: players take turns flicking their wooden hippo disks toward the center of the table while the wooden hoop is spinning. When the hoop stops spinning and lands, any hippos caught in the middle of the hoop or under its edge are out, and score their owners one point. Play continues until someone scores 4 points -- that person is the winner! Though younger children will have a difficult time perfecting their flicks in order to get their hippos near the spinning hoop, it often doesn't matter'--'they'll be just as happy watching the hippos zip across the table, crash into each other, and occasionally go flying across the room. Older kids will take on the challenge of learning to flick their hippos just right'--'with just enough oomph'--'while trying to predict where the spinning hoop will finally land. And what about the grown-ups? If grown-ups enjoy a light, zany game, they'll have fun with this one too. I certainly did. But even if it's not exactly your cup of tea, it plays quickly, so you can get in a quick game of Hula Hippos with your kids and then move on to another activity. (I have played games of Candyland that have gone on Forever, so I certainly appreciate a kids' game that doesn't overstay its welcome.) Hula Hippos does not present players with the opportunity to think deeply about every move. Instead, it provides wacky, and sometimes wild, hippo-flicking fun.

This game is a lot of hippo flicking fun. A very simple concept and my children enjoyed playing with me. It would be nice with younger children as well since everyone plays at once so there's no turn-taking to be done. The previous review was quite complete so I won't reiterate what was said other than that I agree completely. I did wish at one point in the game that we had some sort of "coral" for the hippos and the hoop so that they didn't get flicked so far and it would be more probable that the hippos would end up under or inside the hoop. Overall a fun game that would be inclusive of multiple children of varying ages.

too hard for my 6 year old to flick the hippos near the hula hoop. instead he tends to flick them far away from the goal. perhaps we need a better playing surface. have only tried it once.
