My family has an entire closet dedicated to games but Landlock is the one we reach for the most. From the toddler who enjoys making maps with the sturdy little pieces to the grown-ups who hold grudge matches in the evenings, everyone loves it. Adult guests might look at you funny when you bring out the "gnome game" but only until you've whipped 'em a few times. The game box is also small, making it easy to toss into a suitcase or picnic basket.

We have been able to play a simplified version of this game with our 4-year-old (either by working together against the game or later, by playing each other). However, we're not at all embarrassed to play this with adults. The rules are simple enough for young children to understand, but there is enough strategy involved that really mastering the game can take a while. Even my 64-year-old mother loves to play!

It took a while to get the scoring and the strategy down, but my 8-year old and I would list this among our favorite games. Our family is a BIG fans of most all of the Gamewright games, but this one in particular manages to put an 8-year old and a 40-year old on the same playing field, so to speak. In fact, he has learned to take advantage of me by switching "Land vs. Water" positions every other game so that I become confused whether I'm trying to build "islands or ponds." Get the game. You'll learn what I mean.

I bought this game for my daughter and I to play about three years. We played the game a lot and she loved it. The basic premise is simple: you try to build roads or rivers that link the the four sides of a six-by-six tile area together. You can try to score points by making ponds and rivers, turning over animal tiles and putting gnomes next to each other.
The best part of the game is the design. It is simple and colorful, but full of enough magical creatures to keep the imagination flowing. My daughter and I played the game for quite a while before it ended up back atop the closet. It is now three year later and my daughter (now almost ten) wanted to play the game. We took it out of the closet and started playing. She enjoyed it as much as she did when she was six. And (not to my wife's surprise), I did also. This is one of those great simple games that compel you to play over and over again. Don't neglect this game if you don't have any kids. It is simple enough for adults! Buy it!

I teach in a special education classroom and this game is ideal for "free time" as it only takes about 8 minutes to play a game. It doesn't have a really competitive feel either.

My fiancee' and I bought this game two years ago and play it almost every evening after dinner with a cup of coffee. It's relaxing, yet challenging and after about 20 minutes you can sit back and revel in your creation...win or lose there is always a sense of accomoplishment seeing the map with the gnomes and tussocks....and hopefully a pond or island if you are lucky!

I think that this game is great while teaching a map unit. There is something about looking at the land and water in this game and trying to make sense of a path that will lead a player to win. My students love this game and it gets played occasionally even when we aren't doing maps.

My family, including a teacher, and three little boys, LOVE this game! This is, by far, our favorite Gamewright game so far! The first time my 9 year old played it, he said "this is better than any video game, ever" Quite an endorsement from a kid who got a DS and gamecube for Christmas. My 4 year old can beat me at this. The thing I love most about it is that it puts everyone on a level playing field. It's as much fun to play with my little one, as it is to play with my husband. It's such a simple concept, you build either a path on land, or in water. The object is to have your path reach all sides of a 6x6 square. But you also try to build and block islands or ponds being built, and place your roamin' gnomes to face each other. Trust me, this is a blast! The other thing I really like about this on is that it is a two person game (it can be played in teams as well). Lots of the Gamewright games are more fun with several people, but this is a PERFECT two player game. We play rounds of it every night before bed. BUY THIS GAME!!
