Neat idea, still has some problems, January 7, 2009
I received the TeaStick as a gift, because up until now I've used a french press to make loose-leaf tea, which works well but involves a lot more cleanup. The teastick succeeds in making it simple to make a cup of tea using loose-leaf tea, and I have no complaints about the quality of the tea it makes. The issues I have with it are around design and cleanup.
The design, while very nice, provides several little crevices for small pieces of tea to get into, and you won't be able to get them out until they're floating in your tea. This is mostly just an annoyance, but still. The bigger issue is that because of the way the scoop is designed, you pretty much have to have a large-ish, flat-ish tea box to scoop out of. If you try to scoop out out of a canister, you'll end up dropping a lot of tea all over the place trying to get a proper scoop and smooth it out.
Cleanup is also a bit of a problem, since for people with larger hands, it's pretty much impossible to clean inside the scoop cover. Since bits of tea get caught between the screen and the plastic pieces supporting it, the only way to get these out would be with some kind of test-tube brush or something similarly small and long. Not a showstopper, but definitely an annoyance.
Overall, it's a step up over my french press, but I suspect there are tea balls that do as good a job and eliminate some of the problems I'm having.
