5.0 out of 5 stars The 1st edition of a legendary RPG
Gamma World has seen 6(!) editions in the past 30 years, but the 1st edition is the one everybody wants. A younger cousin to Metamorphosis Alpha, Gamma World captured attention with its evocative cover art of a well-armed party surveying the overgrown ruins of an ancient city.

2.0 out of 5 stars Gamma World goes Marvel
In this the third edition of Gamma World, TSR tried going with the same mechanic as their Marvel RPG. The mechanic was basically d100 based. Having played the first edition of a while this turned me off a little, but what really turned me off about this edition was that it was unplayable because it was incomplete. 5.0 out of 5 stars The 1st edition of a legendary RPG, October 27, 2007
This review is from: Gamma World Science Fantasy Role-Playing Game (1st edition boxed set) (Hardcover)

The rules booklet opened with the eye-opening background story:

"Peoples of the world - you appear bent upon the destruction of a civilization that has taken centuries to build, and the extinction of life on earth.

If that Is your will ... so be it!

We, The Apocalypse, demand an immediate cessation of this insane violence, or we will end it for you ... with a force you cannot conceive.

We have the power!

The choice is yours!"

And so began TSR's Gamma World game in 1978: A rich post-holocaust science fantasy setting.

Finding relics in long-deserted cities of the Ancients...

Encountering bizarre mutated animals...

Thinning foliage that fights back...

CONTENTS: A complete boxed set will include the main rules book and a large campaign map of ruined North America.

Differences between the 1978 and 1980 sets are minimal changes in the cover graphics: 1978 edition had the early TSR lizardman logo and is lacking the "Science Fantasy Role-Playing Game" lettering under the title. The black and white cover graphics of the rules booklet reflects these differences.
