4.0 out of 5 stars Kills rats just fine, October 20, 2007
Very solid gun, would definitely recommend to people who are willing to spend the money. I mostly use it to kill rats from a fourth story window in the city.

You have to be lucky to shoot a rat in the head from that far away, but you can almost always hit them center mass and then quickly reload once they are wounded. A rat's head and body are about the size of a quarter and a soda can, respectively. That gives you a rough idea of the accuracy.

Only complaint I have is that the gun comes with the scope attached to some sort of sight rail. After about five minutes of shooting the sight rail fell off and I couldn't get it back on. Had to attach the scope directly to the gun, and it comes loose if you don't tighten it periodically.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Happy Purchase, December 18, 2008
This review is from: Gamo Viper Combo Air Rifle (Sports)
This review is for the GAMO .177cal Viper w/scope.
The package includes gun, scope, Allen wrenches, instruction manual for installation of scope (which is not mounted), and owners manual for gun. You may also notice an addendum sheet for the scope installation as well as a card for returning the gun to GAMO versus where you purchased it if in the event something goes wrong requiring manufactures repair.
The first thing you have to do once you uncrate it, is to install the scope. The instructions are not very good so let me give you some hints. First, you'll notice the scope is installed on the upper ring rail. Using one of the three hex wrenches (which are included), remove the scope from the rings. The reason for this will be obvious in a moment. On the upper ring rail there is a "recoil pin screw. This mates with the hole in the main scope rail (on the gun). Place the upper rail onto the dove tail of the main rail with the recoil pin adjusted so that it extends into the hole of the main rail. Now lightly tighten the three side rail screws. Do them a little at a time to distribute the torgue evenly. Once that's done you can go ahead and attach the scope to the upper rail. Only tighten the rings screws (8) so that you can adjust the scope forward & aft as well as adjusting the cross hairs so they are plum and true (Straight up and down and side to side). Finish by tightening the 8 screws evenly. The left knob with the numbers is your illuminated reticle adjustment. The higher the number, the brighter the center dot. There is an index mark (machined dot) on the side of the scope. When set to zero, reticle is off. I forgot this and the first day I killed the battery. It takes a Lith/ion #CR 2032. Simply use a quarter in the side of the knob to unscrew the cap (You have to hold the base so the whole thing doesn't spin).
It took me a while to zero this gun because I didn't mount the scope properly the first time around. Once I did however, the gun zeroed in quickly. HINT-Use the same pellets throughout the entire zero process. Use the same distance and until you get close, only adjust windage or elevation, not both together. I shot 40 pellets at a target before I made a single adjustment. I used 10M (33 feet). Understand this, from what I have read, the gun usually needs about 200 pellets shot through before you start to notice consistent shots. I agree. Once this is achieved, you'll love how accurate this gun is. I am hitting a 32oz tomato can at 250 feet on the scopes lowest zoom setting without any leaning or resting on anything....yep just standing up. But if you rest the gun on something, you'll love the groups you'll get at 10 and 20 meters!
The gun comes with 50 PBA pellets which when used, allow for a nice supersonic "crack" as if you are firing a 22! Most of the other pellets will not allow this so if you like the noise, get the PBA, but for target shooting, they are not consistent enough.
Things I Like: I love the feel of this gun. The brake barrel breaks in after 30 uses and is easy for almost anyone. The safety is in a neat spot, easy to set once the shot is taken developing a good habit of setting the safety right after the shot is taken. (The safety is located just forward of the trigger). The Monte Carlo cheek rest. Quality of this gun is great for the most part. The gun, once broken in, is very accurate. The scope is decent, though the instructions are not.
Things I Didn't Like: I don't like the recoil too much. It's starting to get better as it continues to break in. This is not a deal breaker. I don't like the instructions. They could use some English editing. I wish it had a option for iron sights. I knew it had none when I bought it, but it would still be nice to shoot with the scope off. I am going to buy the GAMO Whisper for this purpose!
Summary. I love this gun. Since my work is seasonal, I have been shooting almost every day and never get tired of it. The accuracy blows me away! There are a few upgrades that you should consider if you are a seriuos shooter. The first is a new trigger. There is a better trigger for this gun. Search for it on the internet, you'll find it under GTX-III. Also, there is a company out there that sells and installs a gas spring that helps reduce the noise and the twang. But even without these upgrades, it's fine gun indeed. If this is your first gun, you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars MORE THAN I EXPECTED, February 11, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gamo Viper Combo Air Rifle (Sports)
WOW...I HAVE ONLY FIRED IT TWICE. ONCE WHEN I MOUNTED THE SCOPE, NO ADJUSTMENT, JUST STUCK IT ON AND TIGHTENED THE SCREWS. I FIRED AT A TARGET WITH A NICKLE SIZE BULLSEYE FROM ABOUT 25 YARDS TO BEGIN THE SCOPE ADJUST SEQUENCE AND I REALLY WANTED TO SEE IF I COULD JUST HIT THE CARDBOARD TARGET....I CUT THE EDGE OF THE BULLSEYE.
SECOND SHOT WAS FROM UPSTAIRS WINDOW AT SQUIRREL DIGGING IN MY YARD...ANOTHER BULLSEYE.
IF I HAD TO BUY ANOTHER ONE I WOULD CONSIDER THE "WHISPER" MODEL AS THIS ONE IS LOUD. LOUDER THAN A 22. ITS A WELL MADE WEAPON, NOT A TOY !!! ITS A LITTLE ON THE HEAVY SIDE. I LOVE MINE BUT AFTER THE ONE SHOT THE SQUIRRELS HAVE MOVED OUT AND I HAVE NOTHING TO SHOOT AT. BUT THATS A GOOD THING.
