About the quietness of the Whisper,
By Deputy (Silver City, NM USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gamo Whisper Air Rifle (Misc.)
I see a lot of comments about the Gamo Whisper being "loud" and not quiet. It's NOT the gun that's loud, it's the ammunition you are using in it. The PBA Raptor rounds you guys are firing are SUPERSONIC rounds. The "crack" you hear is the PBA Raptor ammo breaking the sound barrier. Switch to a heavier, standard lead pellet, around 9-10 grams, and you won't hear that crack.

Wow Very impressed with the power this thing has 1200 fps. With PBA's.22 long rifle rim fire 1250 fps. Air rifles have come along way since I was a kid this is definately an adult air rifle I pinned my 1st target to a piece of 1/2'' plywood it blew right through that next I tried a piece of 3/4'' plywood blew through that and stuck in the fence behind it a half inch in, if your looking for an air rifle to kill small to medium size game look no no further, in the wrong hands this air rifle could kill something larger I just can't say it, or even imagine any parent buying this for thier kids without supervsion while there shooting it. I'm not trying to bum anybody's high but this is definetly not for kids. This air rifle is constructed very well and appears to have been well thought out in the design stage. I also like the adjustable trigger, and scope. While I was shooting one of my nieghbors stopped by he thought I was shooting a .22 short rimfire so as far as the sound dampener is concened I may have got one that doesn't work so well or it's louder than I expected fortunetly all my neighbors are cool ( we're all rednecks) lets just hope the fuzz don't stop by for a visit cause they may want to shoot it too or take me to jail either way I'm very pleased with this air rifle and will probably sell a few more for Amazon. Thank You alway's remember safety first.

Game "Whisper"? don't think so.....,
This review is from: Gamo Whisper Air Rifle (Misc.)
I just brought my .22 Gamo Whisper home today. I bought it so I could shoot it in my backyard without freaking out the neighbors who know I'm a firearms instructor. I didn't want them to hear loud shooting and get worried that I had a negligent discharge. I got the Whisper because of its good reviews, but mainly due to the noise supressor it came with.
I took it in the backyard....and BLAM! Man, that thing was so LOUD! I don't know what they're thinking by putting "It's the Quiet Gun!" on the side of the box because believe me, amigos....it isn't even remotely quiet. It's easily as loud as a .22 rifle...as in a REAL .22 rifle. It shoots great, looks great, and handles even better. But, dang, it is so freakin' loud. Suburban backyard shooters looking for a quiet Gamo.... beware!

I got this for a squirrel, that is persistent about wanting a residence inside my house. Look for sales, the combo should be in the $199 range. That is what was paid for mine. First impressions are good. It is a full size adult air rifle with the heft beyond that of a 22 LR. Fit and finish is very good on the rifle and scope. Scope base is sturdy and appears well made. The rifle's iron sights have fiber optic inserts, and adjustable for windage and elevation and are superior to any rifle I own. The scope is has a GAMO label on it but I believe it is made by BSA. The optics are clear but not parallax free, clicks are audible and adjustments correspond to 1/4 MOA adjustments. I do not think it is a true 3x9 power compared to all my other rifle scopes it does not have the same magnification.
It does appear to be quiet as advertised with most of the noise coming from the spring when using lead pellets. The "Raptor" ammo does make a sharp crack but it is not loud. There was some dieseling during the first shots. The pressure created during the shot is enough that the lubrication left in during manufacturing or shipping is ignited by the compression just like in the operation of a diesel engine. In additional to the additional noise you get smoke from the barrel, which is verification of what happened. This stops after the first few shots. Otherwise it is comparable to my daisy power line 880 that runs around 650 fps. The only disappointment I have is that the accuracy is not what I had hoped for. I tried 9 different pellets and so far the best I can manage with the combination is 1" groups at 15 yds, no cross wind, from a rest. I may try swapping the scope, but I'm not hopeful. At the same range the raptor that came with the rifle grouped 2". The sonic crack is somehow satisfying, but they are just not accurate in this rifle. Edit: I have measured the velocity with a chronograph and the true velocity it makes is not that advertised. Using the supplied raptor pellet I get 1,092 FPS, just supersonic. (All measurement made at 5 ft from the muzzle. I have found a pellet that the gamo shoots wells it's a RWS - super dome it's a measure 8.0 grain pellet and I'm able to get ¼" groups at 15 yds. This pellet is being propelled at 867 fps. Not near the 1,000 fps advertised. Given that pellets come in a range of weights I tried the lightest pellet I had (7.5 grain) and was able to get 944 fps. There is no way to get 1,000 fps with this using lead, and not the 1,200 fps using the raptor either. Just for comparison my Daisy 880 Powerline® shoots the same RWS pellets at 667 fps. ($55 at Walmart) so you get another 200 fps for $150 I just don't know if it's worth it for me. But most shooting sports are like that. The difference between standard and magnum are normally in the 2-300 fps range.

Some lessons learned along the way. Yup, got it for urban rabbit disposal and wanted it quiet. I eventually found, it is accurate. I first went to Gander Mt and got Premier pellets. The gun shot them all over the place-lots of flyers. I was near ready to return the rifle. I also tried Crossman pellets with the same results. The instructions say to use Gamo pellets. I went to the range with good rifle rests. The Gamo Premier Ballistic (PBA) pellets gave a 1" group at 25 yds; but, they break the sound barrier and make a loud, 22-like crack (I need quiet). I next tried the Gamo hunting pellets with the BB like tip. Sighted in the scope and got great 1" groups. Gamo red plastic tip pellets shot in the same place and also gave 1" groups. The latter two pellets do not break the sound barrier and are reasonably quiet for an occasional back-yard pop at garden destoryers. The only problem I have with it--as soon as I got it sighted-in, the rabbits seemed to disappear from the back yard.

It doesn't whisper...,

It's a good pellet gun, but the mechanism is about as loud as dropping a 3" thick phone book onto a laminate floor. The alloy pellets go supersonic, so that adds the sharp "Crack" to the report. If you're doing pest control in a tight area, shoot lead pellets and it's not bad since the noise is more mechanical than it is a gunshot report. Sounds a bit like construction noise.
As to shooting, I can't complain at all. It shoots hard and accurate, the scope is bright, and it handles like a nice, full sized rifle.

Received gun in a really large package. I have not put on the scope, of which seems to be pretty nice scope. Open sights are great. Sighted in after about 20 rounds. Gun feels great, looks great, performs great! I use lead only cuz it seems to have much harder hitting ability. Out to about 50 steps I can hit a pie plate every-time. My wife is able to shoot well, and she enjoyed it though a bit heavy. Great price at Amazon($173.00, free shipping incl).

This rifle wasn't loud like some of the other reviews said the first round was as loud as a .22 rifle but after that the only thing you can hear is the spring I have been shooting birds that were side by side I would shoot the first one and the second one wouldn't even move I'm glad I didn't listen to the other reviews

Gamo Whisper Purchase,
By Rod Clark "Rod Clark" (Orange County, USA) - See all my reviews

Purchase of the Gamo Whisper went flawlessly through Amazon and Pyramid saving a good portion over suggested retail. The Spanish made gun appears to be of high quality. As I have seen in other reviews, this gun is not as quiet as you would expect and this is probably due to the high velocity it is firing. It was much louder than a traditional pump air pellet rifle. The PBA rounds that came with the gun were able to penetrate 3/4 inch particle board on many occasions. I had issues with setting the scope properly as this appears to be a timely task. I felt the instructions that came with the gun could have been better.

I have had a lot of fun with this gun. I have one of the older ones without the silencer on it that i gave my brother. He shoots the skunks and racoons that give him trouble around his house. 1 shot and they are no longer a problem. [he has to bag them up an bury them though] I thought the whisper would be a bit less noisey but still makes quite a bang.
would buy it again if i did not have one. |
