i think this kind of music is perfect for people who love the lord and enjoy hip hop beats. We need music like this so we can combine our desire/love for the Lord with music that really draws our interest!

5.0 out of 5 stars Genesis of Christian Gangsta Rap!, June 28, 2000
This review is from: Gang Affiliated (Audio CD)
Four guys from South Central who were formerly gang members and share about their experiences after finding Christ. These tracks bump SO hard! its an older album but it can still hang in the 2G. Mr. Solo's lyrical prowess and depth of content adds to the west coast feel of this album. If you are looking for true hip hop that has a Christian content, and doesn't sound like a bunch of choir boys, then this is the album! I've had the album for 6 years and i still bump it! If you enjoy the sounds of Ice Cube, N.W.A. or any early 90's LA Rap, you'll LOVE this! Listen to it over and over and you too will be both blessed and challenged to take a BOLD stand for Christ! (this album would make a great gift for a newly saved person who is leaving the gang lifestyle). DOUBLE G's fo life!

5.0 out of 5 stars To Holy Hip Hop As The Chronic Was To Secular Hip Hop, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Gang Affiliated (Audio CD)
What can I say? This masterpiece came about in the early-mid 90's when the West Coast had hip hop locked down, Dr. Dre had shook the world from the foundation up with the Chronic, and everybody was bumpin' Ice Cube, MC Eiht, Spice 1, South Central Cartel & the like. For holy hip hop, however, with the exception of T-Bone, there were no other artists comin' thru with that raw, uncut Scrillafornia flavor until these 3 brothaz, the GG'z, came thru with Gang Affiliated. This was put together back in the days when the GG'z were clicked with DJ Dove from SFC, the production was tight, the lyrics were bangin', and again i say, Gang Affiliated was to holy hip hop in the 90's what Dr. Dre's Chronic was to secular hip hop. As far as the negative posts are concerned:(1) Jesus is STILL the Way and (2)Aint nothin' like the ole school. The fact that modern hip hop disregards the old school eras is one of many reasons why it's deteriorating(materialism, drugs, illicit sex, etc). Most of all...this album dropped at a critical time in my life and played a major part in my making a piritual turnaround.

I'm just a white kid from Wisconsin, but even I could tell these beats are phat! (Is that how you say it?) All I know is, I sit around and listen to this album every Friday night...sure beats shooting rats in the barn! Anyhow, buy it. Peace out and word to your mother!

5.0 out of 5 stars HATERS, PLEASE BE QUIET! BEST EVER!, May 30, 2005

This review is from: Gang Affiliated (Audio CD)
WELL, let me start off by saying to all the haters who ripped on this album and said the music sounds OLD. What you should have done when you bought the CD is look at the copyright date on the back. It says 1994, of course it is old. So if you are a NEW Born again believer who loves HIP HOP, please be warned. You are not goin to to get beats by Lil Jon or the Neptunes. You are goin to get some old skool West Coast beats.

As for the CD. It is one of the best gospel Rap CD's out there. Back in 1994 all christian Rap was Happy Christian House music. I was not feelin it at all. So I stayed my worldly ways and kept listening to all artists by DEATH ROW RECORDS. Then came in the Gospel Gangstaz and totally changed the game. They wanted to let you know that they were from the streets. When I heard this CD I was stunned. Because it was what I could totally relate to back in the day. This CD was the first in my Christian Hip Hop collection and it made me want to seek more groups like them. It was hard but they were out there. But none of them were like the Gospel Gangstaz. I WILL WARN YOU BEFORE YOU BUY THIS CD. THE LYRICS ARE GOIN TO BE A LOT ROUGHER THEN MOST CHRISTIAN CD's. The first track alone makes it stand out. BEFORE REDEMPTION lets you know right off the bat that they are from the streets and needed to find a better life. But they talk about the way they lived so you will hear about drive-by shootings and drug dealing. Then you have the track Testimony (A CLASSIC!) which lets you know about each group members last day that they went from World and straight to the Lord. I was born on the streets and done many things. This CD changed my life. It made me stop my Gang Bangin and Bang for Christ. And the rest is history!

Trust me, there is a reason why you come to AMAZON and find the cd USED for $18 or more. IT IS A CLASSIC! If you can get it COP IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eastcoast Lovin' Real WestCoast Music, October 19, 2005
This review is from: Gang Affiliated (Audio CD)
THIS Was the very first Christian Rap album that I had. For many years has a christian it was hard to not listen to Non-Christian music because none of them was the style of music that I liked and could relate too on my views of Christianity. Then my Homeboy at the time introduce me to this group the O.G.G's (Origal Gospel Gangtas) for those who don't know. All I liked at that time was WestCoast music listening to Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Ice Cube, Easy-E, and The Dogg Pound I couldn't help myself, but to listen to them and buy the secular music, but after that. It all changed for me. My Homeboy and I made the promise to never buy secular music again. And to this day Thanks to the O.G.G's I haven't. A life changing album. Give it a chance and it'll change your life. Besides there's nothing like old school as this album came out in 1994. So be ready for the realist album out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for an awesome gospel rap album? This is the one!, April 30, 2007
By
Mr_No_Name (richmond, va usa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gang Affiliated (Audio CD)
Although many might not agree with the use of the n-word and the sometimes violent content of this album, The Gospel Gangstaz surely came correct on this classic 1994 debut! Just about everything on this album is perfectly done. The production is of course shoddy, Which can usually ruin a rap album, But here that just enhances it! This is the rawest sounding gospel rap album ever released and with good reason. The guys are former gang members from la and they got saved only maybe 1 or 2 years before the release of this album and this is actually a gospel rap album that has the capability to appeal to christians and non-christians alike. If you love Ice Cube, MC Eiht, N.W.A, Eazy-E, Early Snoop Dogg, Above The Law, Or pretty much any west coast rap pre-1996, You are gonna be in for a treat when your ears hear the stuff that comes from this album! Tik Tokk, Chille Chill, Mr. Solo, And DJ Dove [Formerly of SFC] all bring nothing but heat on this very edgy and very street christian album. The best part is is that the guys don't try to sound like they're better than everyone else and they don't sound prideful with their faith in Jesus which makes for an even more enjoyable listen. Once the album starts, You can't help but bob ya head [And maybe even get hype] to the cuts on this album. From the gritty ''Before Redemption'' to the deep ''Testimony'' to the party-ready ''Gospel Gangsta Voyage'', This album has it all. Even the skits [Which there are plenty of] are all funny and very revealing. I bet if one were to blast ''Mobbin'' anywhere in california, I bet all the old school west coast rap fans there would get down instantly! The even more fascinating thing about this album is that this album could've easily been profane and extremely violent like the west coast rap that was coming out at the same time period, But this album is relatively clean [Unless you are offended by the n-word] and very fun as well as gangsta. In fact, This album is just as gangsta as the Death Row records albums that were coming out at the time! ''Tears of A Black Man'' dares to go where much gospel rap albums wouldn't even dare go into: Racial issues. The song, Which is a Mr. Solo-only track, is very Public Enemy-like in terms of lyrics and is very realistic and it's a wonder the lyrics to this song was never considered a hip-hop quotable by The Source [''I got the mind, like the kind of Benjamin Bannicker/Still i'm only good enough to be a janitor/My pocket is void so i'm paranoid/I fed off thousands of that, Still i'm unemployed'']. With its extremely catchy reggae hook, ''Tears Of A Black Man'' Reminds one of early conscious rap like KRS-ONE, Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, And X-Clan. If a few of these beats to these songs sound familiar, It's because a few of these beats were used by other west coast rappers [The beat to ''One Time'' was actually used by Ice Cube for ''How To Survive In South Central'', The beat to ''Vengeance Is Mine'' was used by Spice 1 for ''F'ed In The Game'', And the beat to ''Before Redemption'' was later slowed down and used by Snoop for a little-known song called ''Too Black'', Which appeared on the outtakes cd ''Dead Man Walkin''], But these are all still hot songs today. These songs should've made some old school hip-hop compilations by now! No doubt in my mind that if this cd wasn't about finding Jesus, This cd would be honored alongside other west coast classics like The Chronic, Doggystyle, Straight Outta Compton, And Life Is Too Short. Much gospel rap before about 1997 was horrible [with the exceptions of these guys, Grits, And T-Bone], But this is actually one of the very few earlier gospel rap albums that's worth having today. While this is not really the first hardcore gospel rap album [That honor belongs to T-Bone's 1993 debut ''The Life Of A Hoodlum''], It's definitely the greatest all-around gospel rap album to ever be released. For once, This is a gospel rap album that's actually a major force to be reckoned with and i would actually even take it a step further to say this is one of the best rap albums of the 1990's. I could see ''Before Redemption'' or even ''Y Can't Da Homiez Hear Me?'' being on the soundtrack to a movie like ''Menace II Society'' and that's surely something i will probably only say about this album. Is this the most spiritual gospel rap album out there? No. But if it's deep theology and lyrical bible studies you want, Go buy something from The Cross Movement. If it's a godly message mixed with tight funky old school G-funk beats that you're looking for, Buy this album. 1 of my friends ordered this album off of here for my birthday [Bless his soul] and this cd hasn't come out of my cd player since! Once you own this cd, You don't really need any other gospel rap cd's. I have yet to find a gospel rap album that's better than this one. The Gospel Gangstaz were never better on any of their other albums that followed this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars FROM CHRONIC TO GG'S, October 3, 2006
This review is from: Gang Affiliated (Audio CD)
This CD will go down in HISTORY as one of the greatest Christian Rap Albums. In fact, even T-Bone no disrespect, had nothing on the GG's in early 1990's. If you came from the ghetto, barrio, hood, or whatever you call it, and Jesus saved you, this is what you were listening to. If you were a Chronic fanatic, this is what kept you in church and you know it. I thank God for this CD and all the way to the latest, The Flood, GG's have not lost the heartbeat of reaching the Gangtaz. If you love Rap and Jesus, this CD is a most have. A bit of warning, the phrase 'nigga' is used often. It's ghetto style Rap, better get used to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pioneers! ... and yes in yo face!, July 14, 2006
This review is from: Gang Affiliated (Audio CD)
Yes this is very much early 90's old school gangsta rap, but it will always be a classic. I grew up in church so I was not allowed to listen to the secular stuff, so I was always disappointed with what Christian rap was producing in those days. So when these guys came out, I was completely blown away! I had to keep reading the lyrics just to see if these guys were really Christian. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised. Not only did these guys have serious skillz on the mic, but these guys were not afraid to be in your face about God, life, where they came from, etc. These guys paved the way for Christian rap/Hip hop today. And to think that these guys were former gang bangers- "Bloods" and "Crips" is unbelievable... those guys hate each other, but only God can change the lives of two rival gang members and put them in the same group... Amazing! Their other albums are definite must have's for your collection, but "Gang Affiliated" is a classic, a collectors item. So grab it and keep it in your collection.

And yes this album is VERY TOUGH on the ears, but remember at that time, these guys had just barely gotten saved and had only known the ways of these streets there in Compton before this album... which is why track #2 "Before Redemption", knocks you to the floor. And I don't think I've ever heard the phrase, "... havin sex so much, I'm losin weight" on a Christian album before... so be warned, but be blessed! Cuz if God can change their lives, there is hope for you!
