Editorial Reviews

Review

It's like this: nervous but tight guitar figures, dissonant blasts of keyboards, very muscular basslines, drum work that goes from sensitive to full-force and back again, psychedelia coexisting with modernity, ominous rumblings, a guitar sound that at times comes right out of the Andy Gill/Gang of Four era , random blurpy noises. It's really some amazing stuff. A big load of fun, (check out this mspmag interview for the story on the band and the name) with the overall effect defying description.

Take the closing track "European Ambulance" as an example. An aggressive opening guitar riff is mirrored by the drums for a couple of cycles before a more floating and odd-timed section gives pause. A trio of fast descending lines lead into a tension-building start/stop passage that highlights the drummer. The group then settles in on a sort of full-band ostinato that leaves room for guitar solos on top and keyboard lines that add color by going against the general melodic flow. There's a lot going on to be sure, but the Gang Font feat. Interloper manages to squeeze out all of the beauty hidden in such complexity.

And isn't capturing that beauty what jazz is all about? --Marc Saleski-Blogcritics.com

Product Description

Musical combustion is about to take place. Take one part of legendary punk outfit Husker Du (Greg Norton), mix in the bad-ass jazz sounds of Bad Plus, (Dave King), stir vigously with the keyboard of Craig Taborn, and add the spicey seasoning of Happy Apples' Erik Fratzke, and you have the perfect progressive punk jazz stew: Gang Font featuring Interloper.

Rife with intricate and ingenious instrumental interplay, The Gang Font Feat. Interloper is a recording that is as bombastic as it is intricate, weaving thumping bass and murderous drums with schizophrenic guitars and otherworldly keyboards, creating a frantic vitality that is rarely heard elsewhere.

Greg Norton ( Husker Du)

Dave King ( The Bad Plus)

Erik Fratzke (Happle Apple)

Craig Taborn

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, July 10, 2008
This review is from: Gang Font featuring Interloper (Audio CD)
**note: at the time of publishing this review, the sample tracks Amazon has here are NOT from this CD, I don't know what they're from, but it's the wrong CD**
As a jazz fan, it's hard to review this cd because there's not much to compare this to. This cd is closest to Happy Apple's older stuff in spirit, in that it rocks REALLY hard. That makes sense, considering that the bassist from Happy Apple plays guitar on this cd, Dave King (from the Bad Plus and Happy Apple) plays drums, Craig Taborn (Chris Potter's Underground trio) on keys and the bassist from Helmet comprise the group! The guitar is distorted and loud, the keys mostly add counterpoint hits or double the guitar on melody, the drums rock, and the bass sits in the background, adding poly-rhythmic color but not much else. In other words, this is more of a heavy-metal cd than anything, maybe something that fans of Mr. Bungle, Jesus Lizard, or John Zorn's crazy free guitar work, or Tim Berne's work might appreciate most. This is not free jazz, just heavy progressive jazz (if i had to label the sound). If you like the CD, you might also like "Thruster!" with Timothy Young on guitar, Kaveh Rastegar (Kneebody) on bass, and Matt Chamberlain (Critters Buggin) on drums.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong MP3s., September 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The music by The Gang Font featuring Interloper is really good. The problem is, that's not what's for sale in the MP3 store here. I downloaded this album after listening to their stuff on their MySpace page, but got some Jaga Jazzist-sounding stuff instead. Not entirely awful, but definitely not what I paid $8.99 for. Anybody know how to get a refund and/or fix Amazon's problem here?
