Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the streets of New York were overrun with a succession of brutal gangs. For nearly 100 years, these gangs terrorized Lower Manhattan, doling out violence with bludgeons, pistols, fists, and teeth. Whether members of the city's early gangs were striving for power, out for revenge, or seeking riches, their activities almost always resulted in bloody warfare and horrific loss of life.

Owney Madden ordered his men to take all the furniture in the apartment and pile it up against the front door. A policeman had just come by to order the members of the Gopher Gang to pipe down, and Madden was certain he'd be back - and that he wouldn't come alone. The leader of the Gophers wanted his men to be ready. Once the furniture was sufficiently piled, Madden looked out the window. Sure enough, a phalanx of policemen was coming down the street. Soon the voice of an officer could be heard on the other side of the door. The officer ordered Madden and his men to open up. They refused, and began to taunt the policeman instead. Undeterred, the officer banged his nightstick against the door, prompting one of the gang members to raise a gun and fire at him through the window. The glass shattered and the whole police squad fled. But not for long. A little while later, the same officer walked up to the front door and initiated an argument with Madden and his buddy, Tanner Smith. As Madden threatened and derided the officer, other members of the Gophers crowded around to listen - their leader's tirade was just too entertaining to miss. Suddenly, the gang members felt the powerful sting of clubs hitting them. That's when they realized that a couple of the cops had somehow gotten inside the apartment. Moments later, the rest of the squad crashed through the front door. The Gophers had nowhere to go.
