The book takes us directly into the gang world, beginning with a graphic fictional account of a drive-by shooting based on real-life incidents. Gangsta explains the gang culture's world view; the reasons why kids change the way they think and are recruited into gangs; and the three "big lies" all street gangs use to recruit new members and bolster their image. Knox says that contrary to our perceptions, gang members are seeking firm, fair, and consistent external discipline to determine social boundaries; and that promises kept breed respect for the system while promises broken breed contempt. The final chapters of the book offer specific, common-sense solutions for empowering our schools, community organizations, and law enforcement agencies to promote discipline, reduce gang activity and crime, and make our neighborhoods safer.
Author Mike Knox discusses the nature of the gang uniform, and the purpose of graffiti. He offers unique insight into girl gangs, gang myths, and the "jump-out" process of leaving a gang. Illustrations show examples of harmful graffiti, and diagrams outline the genealogy of America's youth-gang "families.
