Editorial Reviews

Originally released in 1993 by DRS (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) with the single Gangsta Lean becoming the biggest single of the year that sold over 2. 5 million copies. Gangsta Lean has over 2 million hits on Youtube and is still a popular song on R&B radio. They also cover Prince's Do Me Baby. DRS is a mixture of R&B and rap with smooth voices over hip hop beats. Out of print for a few years, this classic CD is now available once again. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gangsta R&B!, January 13, 2004
By

This review is from: Gangsta Lean (Audio CD)
Undoubtedly, D.R.S. (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) released the most interesting urban album of 1993. Combining the waning R&B format, new jack swing, with the surging "g-funk" sound, D.R.S. became a surprise hit act in 1993. In fact, the mere success of the lead single was unprecedented for a "rap" group at the time. But who wouldn't be moved by a sentimental dedication to all the brothas lost in the war-torn streets? It moved the whole country, as it topped the R&B charts and was all the rage throughout the fall of '93.

D.R.S. also managed another hit in "Scoundrels Get Lonely". While not as successful as "Gangsta", the single proved that this group was not a one-hit wonder. Both singles favored the R&B flavor of the album, as they crooned effortlessly and incorporated synchronized harmonies. A number of album tracks are worth mentioning as well. "Strip" and "44 Ways" are G-Funk-ness at its best, while "Trust Me" and "Bonnie & Clyde" invokes new jack swing-ness at its best. All tracks mentioned should be on repeat play.

New Jack Swing and G-Funk were two separate genres before this release. This album was the first and only to collaborate both genres successfully and gain commerical attention. Unfortunately, D.R.S. never issued a follow-up, making this rare collaboration a gem worth searching for. In other words, cop this novel release. Not only for nostalgia, but for a piece of very short musical history.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars For The Diry Rotten Scoundrels, August 10, 2001
By
Cazual (Gardena (South Central Los Angeles), California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gangsta Lean (Audio CD)
DRS (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) realesed the CD Gangsta Lean, everyone called it Ganksta R&B, Cuz these guys are sick! The big hit single "Gangsta Lean" was a big hit and its a soft tune about the struggles of losing a homie in Los Angeles. Then the song "Strip," that has the BBD (Bell Biv Devoe) new jack swing dance feel to it is a great song with some intense lyrics. But nothin' compared to the sick "Sickness," this song is as sick as it gets, DRS basically saying I got a problem with killing women, they say "I'll put my nine in between your legs and Pull the Muthaphuccing trigga." "Scoundrels Get Lonely," is a great song and it was a hit as well. My Favorite song has to be "Mama Didn't Raise No Punk," which has a sample of Dr. Dre's "Deep Cover." If you don't like R&B and your a str8 up gangsta rap fan, you'll love this cd. DRS is everythang but R&B.

3.0 out of 5 stars to my homies, September 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Gangsta Lean (Audio CD)
This is cd is one of the best I've heard. Number two and number five are two of the greatest songs. Number five really got to me since I've had friends die. I put it in my car and drive and think about friends who are gone. And number two gives me energy, it really gets me going.
