3.0 out of 5 stars AN OK READ
DON'T GET ME WRONG I ENJOYED THE BOOK. ACTUALLY READ IT IN 3 DAYS. HOWEVER I THINK THIS IS SUCH A LAME STORYLINE. GANGSTA WANTS OUT, MEETS A GOOD GIRL, AND THEN THE UNTHINKABLE. THIS IS A TYPICAL GANGSTER WHO WANTS ANYTHING OUT OF LIFE. I THINK OTHER CHARACTERS WERE A LITTLE MORE DEVELOPED THAN LOU & SATIN WERE, SUCH AS LOU'S BABY MAMA. THE ONLY THING LOU KNEW WAS...

THIS IS A TYPICAL GANGSTER WHO WANTS ANYTHING OUT OF LIFE. I THINK OTHER CHARACTERS WERE A LITTLE MORE DEVELOPED THAN LOU & SATIN WERE, SUCH AS LOU'S BABY MAMA. THE ONLY THING LOU KNEW WAS TO DEFEND HIMSELF WHEN SITUATIONS GOT HEATED. ALTHOUGH WITH THAT SAID, IT WAS EXTREMELY HEARTBREAKING AS THE ENDING CAME UP. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT, BUT DON'T EXPECT ANY MIRACLES

5.0 out of 5 stars Tissues, please????, November 26, 2004
This review is from: Gangsta (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
K'wan has written a heated novel that keeps you curious as to what will happen next. Lou-loc & Satin tried - but the deck was stacked against them from the beginning. The revenge that Gutter ultimately got for his brother was sweet. This book is a page turner from page one. I really enjoyed the character of Cross - MUCH creativity on that one! Mega respect to you, K'wan for your work - you laid it down!....a HIGHLY recommended book for all to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great hip hop fiction, August 30, 2005
This review is from: Gangsta (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
K'wan is one of the best one of hip hop fiction's best writers. His stories are unique, interesting page-turners. His characters are always well developed, real and likeable. The only thing his debut novel "Gangsta" lacks is an editor. I can excuse a mistake or two, even the best editors can overlook them. This book, however, has at least one or two mistakes per page that are extremely irritating to anyone who cares about grammar.

That being said, here's a short summary: Lou-Loc is a young African American who lives in Los Angeles with his pregnant girlfriend. He's a respected killer who decides to move to New York after getting mixed up in a bloody shoot up involving police officers. His real passion is writing, but he's usually too busy shooting people and doing drugs to pursue his dream. Eventually he comes to a turning point and must decide what his priorities are.

I'd recommend this book to any fan of hip hop fiction. I'd recommend his three other books more highly, however, because he seems to have found an editor after leaving Triple Crown Publications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't put it down, February 13, 2004

I search for the right words to express this great and well written novel. It's gripping from start to finish. I found myself right there with the characters and the author's abiltity to turn suspense drama, comedy and love into a most read. The pain and agony I felt for the two best friends. Their struggles, and the triumphs over obstacles and lou-loc's thoughts to make it further than what the street gave yet had to deal with the hand he was dealt(life on the street).

2.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm... could use some work, March 9, 2004

Granted, the story itself was good... it definitely had its' strong points, but as an avid reader of books (avg. 2-3 books a week) I was tempted to put it down just because the editing was so bad. The only thing that kept me reading was the fact that I wanted to see how it would end. I wouldn't say this is the worst book I've read in terms of storylines (although the character storyline was a little predictable), but the editing was TERRIBLE. I would highly recommend Crown Publishing Company to hire some better editors before final release to the public. Good first effort for K'wan though!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a Gangsta's tale of the streets but the key to his heart., January 16, 2008

Obviously with a title such as Gangsta you shouldn't expect anything less then the gritt & grime of street life, hustlin' & gang bangin'. However, let me start off by saying Gangsta is the first book I read by K'wan and it just so happened to be my FAVORITE street-lit love story. Lou-Loc, the main character in the story is a young street banger hustlin' his way through life, with crazy twists and heavy betrayal all he wants in life is to make it out of the game and settle down with his TRUE LOVE, SATIN! OMG, I cried soo hard in this book. The characters are well-developed so you truly feel their emotions.

If you can get past the slang, and the grammar you are in for a REAL TREAT! 5 stars hands down!

3.0 out of 5 stars Caught in the Game, June 22, 2004

This review is from: Gangsta (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
K'Wan's bold debut into the publishing industry is the story of Lou-loc, an aspiring writer and gang member in New York City. Through this raw and unabashed account of life in the game, readers are given an up close look at K'Wan's characters and their struggle.

Lou-loc, originally a gangster from California, moved to New York City with his close friend and member of his brethren, Gutter. While in New York, Lou-loc and Gutter take over Harlem's Crip set and become two of the most powerful and feared hustlers roaming the streets of the city. Unlike Gutter, however, Lou-loc has become weary with the life of a hustler.

Lou-loc meets Satin, a beautiful, intelligent woman who just happens to be a rival gang leader's sister. Lou-loc wants out of the game to focus on his writing, but when tragedy strikes, the calm that had been present in Harlem lifts to uncover a gang war and a homicidal vendetta that Lou-loc cannot ignore.

I was moved by K'Wan's novel despite the editorial issues that were present. The characters took on a very real persona, and their stories were dynamic and emotional. With a bit of editorial tuning, this novel could be one of the greatest in its genre.
