Teen angst,
By
This review is from: Garage Band (Paperback)
Great art, flowing through a story about the ups and downs of a band, the disconnectedness of teenage years, the wrong path and the right one. There's tolerance and understanding among the kids--one of whom is attracted to the swastika and all things Nazi, and his attraction is better understood by his bandmates than by his close relatives. There's a close call with the law. A groupie girlfriend, the streets, a real, almost-gritty millieu. Worth the read.

A Rockin' Read,
By Amy Ward (Lawrence County, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Garage Band (Paperback)
Hey all! I read the graphic novel Garage Band by Gipi. It is so interesting and the artwork is amazing. The story is about a group of teenage boys, their garage band, and what happens when they blow an amp. It's a very simple story but intricately reveals the pasts, relationships, and personalities of each boy. Did I mention how amazing the drawings are? They are so detailed and captivating, especially when the band is practicing a song. You, the reader, feel as if you're at a concert watching them perform. It's a quick read, as most graphic novels are, but it really gets its message of never giving up across. I definitely recommend this title.

A song to youth,
This review is from: Garage Band (Paperback)
Four teenage boys living in a rural town form a band and are given a garage by one of the boys' fathers to practice their music in. This is the story of their very different lives and how despite their backgrounds they are brought together by a shared love of music. Gipi writes and draws a compelling story of youth, where we get to know the different members of the band and their personalities. They had small adventures such as stealing equipment from a church basement when their amp blows out or the drummer's weird obsession with Nazis, but there's also the more serious side of how opportunity comes along for some and not for others and what real friendship is. I enjoyed the book a lot and, while not as powerful as his other book "Notes for a War Story", it captures the hope and energy of youth and passes it on to the reader. Well worth a read and definitely one to pick up if you're an indie comics fan.

Gipi never ceases to amaze with his vivid artwork, unique but truthful stories, and his very lifelike characters. Recommended reading to anyone looking for a comic that isnt the usual Capes or Criminals story.
