Book Description

September 15, 2008
Suppose the girl you’re crazy about tells you she’s being stalked and wants your advice on buying a gun? And what if the next day, as you’re picking up the leaf rake you left in her garden, you look through her back window and see her good-looking cousin dancing in her bra and panties. What would you do? For Kyle Waite, gardener and harmonica player, the answer is total immersion in his buddy Joe’s garage band. With an overweight bass man, a drummer that burglarizes houses, a keyboardist who sticks safety pins in his face, and Joe, a happy-go-lucky guitarist, the music is the dream. As the commercial success of the band seems imminent, and Kyle begins to find true love, a chain of harrowing events threatens to doom the garage band and forever change the lives of its members. Garage Band is a gripping coming-of-age story that takes place in California’s Marin County in the 1980s. Both heartbreaking and hilarious, it’s an irreverent tale that covers the gauntlet from joy to sorrow; from the innocence and recklessness of youth to the blessed illusions we have about ourselves. Pick up two copies of this book, one for yourself and another for a friend! S.F. Lynch was born in San Francisco. He currently resides in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, two sons, and their Australian Shepherd. His work has appeared in Cold Drill, Coe Review, Thought Magazine, and Boise Weekly.

4.0 out of 5 stars I was a high school loser, May 29, 2009
This review is from: Garage Band (Paperback)
Garage Band

At first what caught my eye about this book was the wonderful cover art, and the blurb on the back jacket was intruiging. I am a big fan of the SF Bay Area music scene and all the great musicians and bands that have ties to Marin County, California. While the description of music as depicted in the book was right on the money the biggest surprise was how closely the storyline mirrored my early life, and young manhood. Sometimes painfully honest--too honest! the book doesn't sugar coat what it's like to be without a steady girlfriend or how feeling lonely can drive one to self abuse and destruction, unemployment, crime. The action sequences are
particularly vivid, I've lived out moments like those myself. While some
of the scenes are very crude or disturbing, that's what it was like, for me. I too was a high school loser and wish I could live that part of my life over again--I'd do it all dirrerently. As I read this book, I was
rooting for all the characters, "don't, don't do that, stop, smell the roses," etc. But nothing can stop young people from screwing up. By the
end, I wished for redemption, maybe there could be a sequel? Not for the
feint of heart or elite intellectual, these words are raw, down and dirty, painfully honest. You could tell the writer lived that life.
