I was a high school loser,
By HS Loser "high school loser but I made it wit... (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Garage Band (Paperback)
Garage Band
At first what caught my eye about this book was the wonderful cover art, and the blurb on the back jacket was intruiging. I am a big fan of the SF Bay Area music scene and all the great musicians and bands that have ties to Marin County, California. While the description of music as depicted in the book was right on the money the biggest surprise was how closely the storyline mirrored my early life, and young manhood. Sometimes painfully honest--too honest! the book doesn't sugar coat what it's like to be without a steady girlfriend or how feeling lonely can drive one to self abuse and destruction, unemployment, crime. The action sequences are particularly vivid, I've lived out moments like those myself. While some of the scenes are very crude or disturbing, that's what it was like, for me. I too was a high school loser and wish I could live that part of my life over again--I'd do it all dirrerently. As I read this book, I was rooting for all the characters, "don't, don't do that, stop, smell the roses," etc. But nothing can stop young people from screwing up. By the end, I wished for redemption, maybe there could be a sequel? Not for the feint of heart or elite intellectual, these words are raw, down and dirty, painfully honest. You could tell the writer lived that life. |
