Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-When Will decides to have a garage sale to clean out his room, his classmates want to get in on the action. The boy doesn't hesitate to sell toys and belongings he's outgrown, except for one small item-a plaque decorated with daisies and the message "Happiness Is a Friend." The thought of keeping it gags him, but it was given to him as a gift in the Christmas exchange. What if he sells it and Louise finds out? Worse yet, what if someone in their class buys it and gives it to her at her upcoming birthday party? Readers are sure to be entertained by the believable characters and the fast-moving, action-packed plot. Pencil illustrations-one per chapter-allow youngsters to visualize players and scenes in this lighthearted book.

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. Will's decision to hold a garage sale brings ramifications far beyond his expectations. First, instead of laughing at his idea, his classmates want a piece of the action (and the profits). Second, his reason for making money--to buy a birthday present for Louise--becomes a complicated affair. He decides to sell a plaque Louise had given him at last year's Christmas exchange, but he wants to sell to just the right buyer. Unfortunately, while Will is in the house for a moment, Jan demands to buy the plaque from Pete, who is managing the cash box. Louise's best friend, Jan, whose prickly personality earns her few friends, now has the perfect birthday present for Louise. Sure that Louise will recognize the gift, Will shifts into high gear for damage control. This is a breezy chapter book with instant appeal. From beginning to end, the story is stuffed with tension, humor, and a striking cleverness. The characters are realistic and refreshing, and the black-and-white drawings add to the fun. Buy more than one copy if you want to avoid frustrated librarians and kids. Deborah Abbott --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
