Book Description

4 and upP and up
When Jo is slow to take out the trash one evening, the garbage comes to life and hauls her outside instead. The beast threatens mayhem throughout the neighborhood, but Jo is undaunted. She plucks him limb from limb, finding another use for his cardboard head, fibrous fanny, and other various parts. By the time she is done, Jo sees how recycling can be a resourceful way to put the beast back in his place-and make an unpleasant chore more fun. This book brings to life the benefits of recycling and the hazards of a wasteful attitude.

5.0 out of 5 stars For teaching young folks early about the fun of recycling, September 17, 2001
This review is from: The Garbage Monster (Hardcover)
The Garbage Monster is an engaging children's book about garbage and recycling, with a fantastic twist. When young Jo hauls out the household garbage one evening, the garbage comes alive and threatens her! But Jo plucks him apart limb from limb, and uses recycling to vanquish the beast - and make her chores more fun. The rhyming text is delightfully written by Joni Sensel, with the unique touch of one letter per line being smudged, as if from an old typewriter. The caricature illustrations by Chris Bivins of Jo, her dog, and the Garbage Monster stick to basics, limited but colorful images on a simple background. Overall, The Garbage Monster is an excellent and recommended picturebook to start teaching young folks early about the fun and importance of recycling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to read aloud to emerging readers, May 27, 2009
This review is from: The Garbage Monster (Hardcover)
As an environmental stewardship educator, I use this well developed book all the time. Good for introducing the subject of responsible solid waste management. I use for oral readings with preK-1st grade audiences. It's entertaining with great basic content!
