Move Me Brightly – Celebrating Jerry Garcia’s 70th Birthday ~ Trailer

Biographyby William Ruhlmann

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jerry Garcia was best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead, the rock band for which he served as de facto leader for 30 years, 1965-1995. Concurrently for much of that time, he also led his own Jerry Garcia Band (JGB), and he performed and recorded in a variety of configurations and a variety of styles, ... Editorial Reviews

Two CD/Digipak. GarciaLive Volume Two captures the classic latter-era lineup of the Jerry Garcia Band in the very familiar surroundings of the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. Recorded during a fruitful period for the band, which has resulted in two previous releases (Jerry Garcia Band and How Sweet It Is), this show features a guest appearance by acclaimed banjo player Bela Fleck to kick off the second set with a fiery rendition of "Midnight Moonlight" and an otherworldly adventure on the Jimmy Cliff classic, "The Harder They Come."

5.0 out of 5 stars MAYBE BETTER THAN "VOLUME ONE" June 25, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This Summer 1990 show may be even better than Volume One. With the addition of singers Gloria Jones and Jaclyn Labranch, Garcia's voice blends with Jones and Labranch into something quite nice when they're together. But overall, Garcia's vocals are some of his better efforts-strong and clean. A few highlights: Just listen to the first track, "How Sweet It Is...", and you'll hear what I mean about the vocals. Garcia sings out front and Jones and Labranch join in on the chorus. And listen to Garcia's guitar. His molten notes just get fired out in cleanly picked succession. And Melvin Seals' organ is the perfect foil for Garcia. But then the entire set is like that. This volume floats between 4 and 5 "stars", but is closer to 5 "stars".

Dylan's "Forever Young" is taken at a perfect, slow pace, which lets the lyrics shine though. Garcia's "Run For The Roses", with the additional vocalists contributing in the background is tight and fine. And as usual Garcia gets off another great solo. But check out "Tears Of Rage" and "Deal"--two more great versions from this concert--what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Garcia (especially) and the band really give these two tunes a fine workout. These two versions will put a smile on your face. Even early on in this set, there's something almost magical about the performances here. It's obvious that Garcia is full of energy--both vocally and instrumentally. And his band are with him every step of the way.

Discs Two starts off with "Midnight Moonlight", featuring banjo wiz Bela Fleck. This Peter Rowan tune harks back to earlier country/folk days. But Jones and Labranch give it a bit more of a contemporary feel. Seals organ fills are just right--never overpowering the song, yet adding depth to the sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars 10 years gone by - To dismiss? Or say "yes, & buy"? September 13, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I recently purchased this album, volume 2, to add to my ever expanding collection of CD's & MP3 Library. My REVIEW IS BASED ON A COMPARISON TO VOLUME 1, which is 10 years before Volume 2. I absolutely love Volume 1, so after reading some reviews on this album, I decided to get this, to see the differences and decide what I like best. Some of the negatives (in my own, personal opinion)of this album (Versus Volume 1) would be:

- 10 years have gone by, you can hear the difference in Jerry's voice. It starts to sound aged by this point.

- Back up Vocals: For this live set, there are a couple of women singing as back up, which I find to be more distracting than pleasurable. For me, it takes some of the Rawness Jerry provides when singing alone or with the actual band. I don't think they added the female backup singers because they need to add something more to their music. I think they were just an addition to compliment the songs. I find however, this takes away the "raw" edge I feel and hear with out this feature.

- Sound Quality: I notice that a lot of the album sounds more like a bootleg that was successful, but it doesn't compare to the clarity of volume one, but that was a different time, a different location, and other variables that play into the fact that this particular live event's sound isn't as clean.

Some of the positives of this volume:

- It's still the Jerry Garcia Band, and this is by no means a poor purchase. Additionally, it's still good ol' Jerry and friends. they Jam just the same as they have been for decades.

- It has great songs, and some of the versions that are in volume 1 are played in volume 2. This is interesting to hear some of the differences in the way the songs are played out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Jerry July 2, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As was the case with all JGB shows, Jerry and the band romp through sets of his favorite old time songs. But the versions are all standouts. Listen to Jerry's voice on Evangeline, you can hear his love of the song; it's great hearing him in such good spirits. Set two is the standout set for me, culminating in a Tangled Up in Blue in which Jerry and John Kahn trade licks that will give you chills, maybe even a tear to your eye and leave you in awe. I can't get enough of this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Hot October 21, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm a fairly staunch Grateful Dead 70s snob, and this recording kinda knocked my socks off. It sounds like it was mixed live to 2-track (on the fly) and it does get a little ambient sounding at times, but there is also lotsa power throughout. The playing really catches fire on the second disc. The short Bela Fleck segment is a completely new flavor to me and if a little tweedly in his solos still nigh on fantastic. Even better, the band goes over the top during "Think" and the momentum from there carries the next two songs. It may be more difficult to find gems like this in the later GD and JGB material, but they are out there and this is one fine example.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!! January 13, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was a show an old friend who has passed talked about as "the best JGB show of all time" and I have to say after all these years of expectations it fully exceeded mine. No collection should be without this or the others in this JGB collection.

This volume 2 is engineered very well. The quality of the songs are perfect. There are a few songs on vol 2 that are also on vol 1. It didn't bother me a bit. It is that good.

Do we know if this is from multi-track tapes or is it a soundboard recording? What do we know about the sound quality?
